The WikiHouse project is an open-source library of construction sets for houses, where anyone can submit, edit, and use the designs. The design's components can all be "printed" from plywood using a CNC machine, and are simple enough to assemble with minimal training.

He and his colleagues have been working on a radical idea to disrupt the traditional practice of housing design and production: the WikiHouse open-source construction set. Users can download, modify, and share designs for small structures, which can then be cut quickly on CNC machines and assembled socially, barn-raising style, in about a day. EVAN O'NEIL: Alastair, what was the inspiration for WikiHouse and how did you become involved? So we're very obsessive thinkers about the politics of this stuff, but we're also habitual doers, too—or at least experimenters. WikiHouse, une maison open-source pour démocatiser l'architecture. Début avril, alors que le OuiShare Fest était en pleine préparation, nous cherchions une idée pour matérialiser la puissance des réseaux collaboratifs.
La WikiHouse, imaginée grâce à des plans en Open Source, découpée dans une “usine de quartier”et assemblée pendant le Fest était l’exemple parfait. Voici notre carnet de chantier. La communauté OuiShare compte dans ses rangs les aborigènes du “savoir open source” (Wikipédia, Open Street Map par exemple), les zozos de la “finance de pair à pair” (Leetchi, Kisskissbankbank, etc.) ou encore la tribu des “makers” (les Fablabs ou encore l’upcycling). C’est à cette dernière bande de créatifs qu’appartient Justyna. Parce que les challenges ne l’effraient pas, elle a proposé, à un mois du festival, de monter une WikiHouse pour le OuiShare Fest.

Car même si c'est "vendu" comme étant facile, monter soi-même sa maison en kit est un vrai challenge. Moi, je sais que ça me saoulerait assez vite... Mais certains le font et y arrivent plutôt bien. Les raisons d'acheter une maison en kit sont nombreuses, mais on retient souvent le prix qui est plus bas que de faire construire de manière traditionnelle ainsi que la satisfaction d'avoir fait ça par ses propres moyens. Le matériau est essentiellement le bois, qui est prédécoupé en usine et livré au client sur son terrain. Alastair Parvin est un architecte anglais qui croit beaucoup à ce concept et qui a décidé de lancer un wiki qui permettra à tout le monde de télécharger les plans 3D d'une maison en kit à monter et à "imprimer" soi-même.

Rather than solving problems from scratch, adapt other people's solutions, and then give them credit. Linus Torvalds thought of this phrase. Design for materials and components which are reasonably cheap to buy, low-carbon and fully recyclable or biodegradable. Design is disruptive when it lowers the threshold. WikiHouses should be capable of being habitable throughout the year, and as efficient as possible in the use of energy and water. Design in such a way as to offer maximum provision for the safety, security and health (both mental and physical) of the users at all stages of the structure's life. As a general rule, design for the climate, culture, economy and legal / planning framework in which you live, and you know best.
