Some suggest click through rates are as low .09%, a shockingly low number .

The Golden Age of Internet Marketing?

Going Native | Blog @ Percolate

http://blog.percolate.com/2011/going-native/ Andy Weissman wrote an interesting post about what he calls the “golden age of internet marketing.” Essentially his vision, which I mostly agree with, is that a few large platforms are going to create native monetization models that better align the interests of brands, consumers and platforms than display advertising ever did. Google and Facebook are the two clear winners in this world so far, as both have found ways to serve brand needs while creating a better experience for users (at least with paid likes in the case of Facebook). There are a few additional thoughts I have on this whole conversation, though. First, what are the ramifications of a web that is controlled by a few successful platforms?
http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2011/11/salmon-future-online-ads/ I gave a talk last Thursday at the AppNexus Summit in front of a few hundred digital advertising types. The first part of the talk was a macro overview, but when the Q&A session started, all that anybody wanted to talk about was my take on online media. And given how granular the discussions over the course of the rest of the day were going to be, I wanted to push back a bit against some of the unexamined assumptions which I encounter most of the time when I meet online-media people. It’s a known fact in advertising circles that only idiots click on ads — and yet advertisers still think that click-through rates mean something, and that a higher click-through rate means a better ad.

Tapad Brings Ad Retargeting To Mobile, And $1.8 Million From Powerhouse Investors

http://techcrunch.com/2011/06/15/tapad/ One of the best-performing technologies in online advertising right now is retargeting—everyone from Google to startups are making bank from it. That’s when you browse the Web and are shown an ad from a site you’ve visited in the past. The clickthroughs are much higher than a random display ad.
From MediaPost.com, this story about the growing importance of the mobile web for advertisers (and business development programs): Mobile experts have long advised brands and publishers to set up mobile-optimized sites that they can drive consumers to via mobile advertising. It looks like they may be catching on, with nearly half (49%) of mobile campaigns sending people to their mobile sites in April, representing a 28% increase from a year ago, according to the latest data from mobile ad network Millennial Media. http://www.business2community.com/online-marketing/digital-marketing-and-the-state-of-the-bobile-web-think-bigger-037805

Moving Beyond Systems of Record to Systems of Engagement « Dachis Group Collaboratory

When we look back at the first decade of the 21st century, it will be obvious that a few momentous changes in the business and computing landscape occurred. Of these, one of the most profound has been a decreasing emphasis on systems of record and the move towards what are called systems of engagement . Over the last 30 years, information technology has transformed the business landscape by capturing, structuring, and automated a growing percentage of the information that our businesses require to operate. This has offered a multitude of benefits to the organizations that have heavily invested in IT, not the least that information technology has been the one area where world class companies typically invest more than average performers . This is in contrast to finance, HR, or procurement, where the best companies usually spend far less than middle-of-the-road companies.

Paygr Looks To Combine Facebook And PayPal In A Marketplace For Local Buying And Selling

It’s no secret that the local buying and selling market is an active one these days. Blink once and you will likely have missed the launch of five local-focused startups. PayPal, eBay, and craigslist all offer models that have become the roadmap for a number of startups trying to intermix their features for a more targeted local market of buyers and sellers. In September 2010, Paygr co-founders Brad Damphousse and Andrew Ballester began work on Paygr, working closely with the PayPal team on their API in order to gain insight into the backend and the best methods to offer a secure way to send and receive payments online. Building on this payment mechanism, Paygr took the basic idea behind craigslist’s “Services” and “For Sale” features and is attempting to make local transactions less anonymous and more secure.
