Kansei engineering. Kansei Engineering (Japanese: 感性工学 kansei kougaku, emotional / affective engineering) aims at the development or improvement of products and services by translating the customer's psychological feelings and needs into the domain of product design (i.e. parameters). It was founded by Mitsuo Nagamachi, Ph.D, Professor Emeritus of Hiroshima University (also former Dean of Hiroshima International University and CEO of International Kansei Design). Kansei Engineering parametrically links the customer's emotional responses (i.e. physical and psychological) to the properties and characteristics of a product or service. In consequence, products can be designed to bring forward the intended feeling. It has now been adopted as one of the topics for professional development by the Royal Statistical Society. Introduction[edit] This demand has triggered the research dealing with the translation of the customer's subjective, hidden needs into concrete products.

I welcome suggestions for additions or corrections. —Victor Lombardi, March 2005 Engineering, medicine, business, architecture and painting are concerned not with the necessary but with the contingent - not with how things are but with how they might be - in short, with design. —Herbert Simon, The Sciences of the Artificial, 1969 This role of manager as designer is hardly mentioned in the literature, and barely acknowledged in business practice. ...Managers practice "silent design"...the many decisions taken by non-designers who enter directly into the design process, no matter how unaware they or others may be of their impact.— Angela Dumas and Henry Mintzberg, Managing the Form, Function, and Fit of Design, 1991.

Peter Behrens (14 April 1868 – 27 February 1940) was a German architect and designer. He was important for the modernist movement, and several of the movement's leading names (including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius) in earlier stages of their careers.

Herbert Alexander Simon (June 15, 1916 – February 9, 2001) was an American political scientist, economist, sociologist, psychologist, and professor—most notably at Carnegie Mellon University—whose research ranged across the fields of cognitive psychology, cognitive science, computer science, public administration, economics, management, philosophy of science, sociology, and political science.
With almost a thousand very highly-cited publications, he was one of the most influential social scientists of the twentieth century.[4] Simon was among the founding fathers of several of today's important scientific domains, including artificial intelligence, information processing, decision-making, problem-solving, attention economics, organization theory, complex systems, and computer simulation of scientific discovery. He also received many top-level honors later in life. Early life and education[edit] Herbert Alexander Simon was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 15, 1916. THE DESIGN THEORY NEXUS. The User Innovation Revolution. According to innovation expert Eric von Hippel, users are often the first source of new products — and that has important implications for businesses.
Eric von Hippel is a professor of technological innovation at the MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge, Massachusetts. What if much of what you know — or think you know — about the innovation process is wrong? That’s a question Eric von Hippel thinks many companies — and businesspeople — should consider. Von Hippel, who is a professor of technological innovation at the MIT Sloan School of Management as well as a professor in MIT’s Engineering Systems Division, has spent much of his professional career doing research that has led him to a radical conclusion: The traditional view of the product innovation process is flawed.
In the traditional view, companies get too much credit for product innovation, according to von Hippel — and users get too little. Von Hippel has decades of research to support his theory. Designer as integrator: reality or rhetoric? - Northumbria Research Link. User-centered design. The chief difference from other product design philosophies is that user-centered design tries to optimize the product around how users can, want, or need to use the product, rather than forcing the users to change their behavior to accommodate the product. UCD models and approaches[edit] For example, the user-centered design process can help software designers to fulfill the goal of a product engineered for their users. User requirements are considered right from the beginning and included into the whole product cycle. These requirements are noted and refined through investigative methods including: ethnographic study, contextual inquiry, prototype testing, usability testing and other methods.
Cooperative design: involving designers and users on an equal footing. All these approaches follow the ISO standard Human-centred design for interactive systems (ISO 9241-210, 2010).
