Ten things that aren't free - but should be (and how to get them for free anyway)

About a dozen years ago, my bank wanted to charge me to bank online. I immediately moved my money to another bank, one that didn't charge me to pay bills and manage my accounts online, and I've been with them ever since. I hate paying for anything that should be free. Online banking, while now free everywhere, was one of those things that I thought should be free because it saved the company money instead of having me deal with a bank teller or paying with checks. Free checking was once offered free by many banks as a way to keep customers. That's changing , with many big banks offering the service only if customers maintain a high balance, bank through self-service channels such as an ATM, or frequently use the bank's debit or credit card. http://www.dailyfinance.com/2010/09/21/free-things-people-pay-for-too-often/

Gardenkultur (via Inhabitat ) makes a simple recycling project out of even the most complex novels, but carving into the heart of a book, sealing off the resulting space and putting seeds of little trees or other plant life into the curved void.

Unclutterer: Daily tips on how to organize your home and office.

Although I grew up spending weekends on our family farms shucking corn and talking to Bessie the Cow (all the cows had the same name, it was easier that way), I am a big-city girl at heart. I long to be in a city with a coffee shop right around the corner and pavement under my feet. And for most people, myself included, city living is synonymous with small-space living. http://unclutterer.com/
