That has all changed with LinkedIn. Now you can publicly display your resume, easily interact with industry professionals, and discover that your new boss is connected to your favorite college professor. And with its recent IPO, LinkedIn has been all over the news. After talking with my colleagues at Lab42 about our LinkedIn profiles, we were interested to find out exactly how other users were interacting with the site. Lab42 surveyed 500 Americans who were registered LinkedIn users to discover how they utilized their profile and to see if they valued LinkedIn as a professional networking tool. LinkedIn has taken a number of deep data dives on the profile information of its 120 million members to highlight trends.

The company has compared men and women networkers, professional names and more. Today, the company has focused on examining the profiles of entrepreneurs, and sifted through its millions of public profiles, to analyze tens of thousands startup founder profiles on the site. Here’s how LinkedIn evaluated and separated the data. Linkedin considered professionals as Startup Founders if they identified themselves as founders (or co- founders) of U.S. companies created after 2000, with a LinkedIn company profile, and that currently have between 2 – 200 employees. LinkedIn excluded small law, consulting and real estate firms, as well as LLCs (the pool ended up with over 13,000 entrepreneurs).

As you can see from the infographic, the data shows that the most represented business schools amongst founders are Stanford, Harvard and MIT Sloan taking the top spots. LinkedIn has taken another deep dive on its user data, comparing women and men’s networking skills on the 100 million-plus member professional network.

The verdict: LinkedIn says that that men are overall more savvy networkers than women, but men and women behave differently in online professional networking. To evaluate LinkedIn “networking savviness” index, the Analytics Team diced data of current industry, current company, and professional connections for members in the US. While users don’t have to designate whether they are a male or female on their LinkedIn profile, the networked had to guess a person’s gender using their first name and matching this against a database of baby names.

LinkedIn measures networking “savviness” based on the the ratio of one-way connections that men have to connections that women have, and the ratio of male members on LinkedIn to female members. Professional networking site LinkedIn had its initial public offering Thursday, with shares of the company debuting on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol LNKD.

Shares were initially offered at $45, but skyrocketed to as high as $92.99 in early trading. LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman's stake was estimated to to be worth as much as $855 million at the $45 share price.
