Blue Chicago Chicago, Illinois. Ellington. Heart. Heart is an American rock band who were formed in British Columbia, Canada in 1973. Throughout several lineup changes, the only two remaining members of the group are sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson. The group rose to fame in the 1970s with their music being influenced by hard rock as well as folk music. In 1977, Heart's record label, Mushroom Records, fueled rumors that Ann and Nancy were lesbian lovers by running a full-page ad in Rolling Stone showing the sisters bare-shouldered (as appearing on the "Dreamboat Annie" album cover) and suggestively captioned, "It was only our first time!

" This was done without the sisters' permission and awareness. That was one of the main reasons why they left Mushroom Records and were signed to Epic Records. After diminishing in popularity for a couple of years in the early 80s, the band enjoyed a comeback in 1985, experiencing further successes with their power ballads and pop hits into the 90s. History of Rock & Roll. The songs and the sounds we call "rock and roll" evolved from many different sources, in many different regions, and at many different moments in twentieth- century history. The music was shaped—and continues to be molded and transformed—by countless regular people, some doing what they love, others seeking refuge from what they hate, some hoping to change the world, and still others resisting what they fear.

How many times per week would you say you hear someone refer to "rock and roll" in some form or another? Probably more often than you realize. Let's think about this. Maybe you've been watching "LA Ink" and heard tattooist extraordinaire, Miss Kat Von D express her enthusiastic approval for, well, just about anything by proclaiming, "Rock on, dude! " Maybe your mom says, "that's rockin'" at the most inappropriate moments, like ours do. You may have followed MTV's advice and "turned up the volume on your rock style" by painting your finger and/or toe nails black. America Rocks and Rolls. The prosperity of the '50s allowed teenagers to spend money on records by their favorite bands and singers. Rock and roll was everything the suburban 1950s were not. While parents of the decade were listening to Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and big bands, their children were moving to a new beat.

In fact, to the horror of the older generation, their children were twisting, thrusting, bumping, and grinding to the sounds of rock and roll. This generation of youth was much larger than any in recent memory, and the prosperity of the era gave them money to spend on records and phonographs. The Roots of Rock Alan Freed, the Cleveland disc jockey credited with coining the phrase "rock and roll," was the master of ceremonies at many of the first rock concerts, including his 1955 Easter Jubilee. The roots of rock and roll lay in African American blues and gospel. Disc jockey Alan Freed began a rhythm-and-blues show on a Cleveland radio station.

On a lonely night in 1903, W.C. Handy, the African American leader of a dance orchestra, got stuck waiting for a train in the hamlet of Tutwiler, Mississippi. With hours to kill and nowhere else to go, Handy fell asleep on a hard wooden bench at the empty depot. When he awoke, a ragged black man was sitting next to him, singing about "goin' where the Southern cross the Dog" and sliding a knife against the strings of a guitar.

The musician repeated the line three times and answered with his instrument. Intrigued, Handy asked what the line meant. It turned out that the tracks of the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley Railroad, which locals called the Yellow Dog, crossed the tracks of the Southern Railroad in the town of Moorehead, where the musician was headed, and he'd put it into a song. It was, Handy later said, "the weirdest music I had ever heard. " That strange music was the blues, although few people knew it by that name. Image Quotes! Sometime around 1890, the blues emerged as a distinct African-American art form, rooted in the southern U.S. and drawing on work songs and hollers, folk tradition, black spirituals, and the popular music of the time.

Looking back from 1890, one can speculate about the African influence in the musical structure of the blues as it grew from slave culture and the memory of slavery. Looking forward from 1890, a time of transition in America and of dashed hopes for blacks in the resurgent Jim Crow South, one can see the blues as a powerful force both shaping and shaped by the evolution of American popular culture (from the "race records" craze of the 1920s through the blues-fueled rock revolution of the postwar years) and the history of black and white race relations in the century ahead. "The blues ain't nothing but a good man feelin' bad. " That's what Leon Redbone said, anyway, and who can't relate to that? What about when your parents went crazy for Elvis? That was the blues. Words from the very, ahem, wise Kid Rock this past Sunday May 19, at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards held in Las Vegas. I don’t usually watch music award shows. Kid Rock was right. Which brings me to my point. A part of me is happy about this. Pop has completely dominated the charts. But remember the days when rock held the top spot? Knowing that there are so many people missing out on, what I like to call, modern-day classical music, saddens me. Mötley Crüe, Rush Among Music’s 40 Big Moneymakers. Billboard Magazine has published a list of the top music moneymakers for 2012, and Mötley Crüe, Rush, Foo Fighters and Linkin Park made their list. The list took a look at US income only, and covered what their net earnings were, not gross income. Not surprisingly, many of the artists grossed the majority of their income through touring, even though album sales favored into the equation with mega-sellers like Adele. Also not that shocking is that digital revenue was only a fraction of most artists’ revenues. Mötley Crüe was the most “metal” of the moneymakers, coming in at #38 on the list, having made $5,376,272.

That’s a pretty solid take from playing mainly Summer dates. Rush also appeared on the list, coming in at #32 with a gross of $5,819,304. Led Zeppelin. Our historical understanding of antebellum America is heavily colored by our knowledge of the disaster that brought that era of American history to a close: the Civil War.

But the people who lived through the antebellum period had no way of knowing that historians would later define their era by the war that ended it. ("Antebellum" is Latin for "pre-war. ") Antebellum Americans did, however, understand and appreciate the seriousness of the increasing sectional conflict dividing the country between the slave-labor, agricultural South and the "free labor," industrializing North. Antebellum culture in America reflected the growing sectional crisis, at times seeking to pave over sectional differences and at other times making light of them. Congressmen pushed through a "gag rule" so that the difficult subject of slavery would simply be made taboo in the chambers of government.
