Childhood trauma leads to lifelong chronic illness — so why isn’t the medical community helping patients? « ACEs Too High. When I was twelve, I was coming home from swimming at my neighbor’s dock when I saw an ambulance’s flashing lights in our driveway. I still remember the asphalt burning my feet as I stood, paralyzed, and watched the paramedics take away my father. It was as if I knew those flashing lights were a harbinger that my childhood was over. At the hospital, a surgeon performed “minor” elective bowel surgery on my young dad. The surgeon made an error, and instead of my father coming home to the “welcome home” banners we’d painted, he died.

The medical care system failed my father miserably. Then the medical care system began to fail me. At fourteen, I started fainting. In my early forties I developed Guillain Barre Syndrome, a neurological autoimmune disorder that causes paralysis from the neck down. I recovered, only to relapse, falling paralyzed again. My physician explained that ongoing adversity in childhood leads to a chronic state of “fight, flight or freeze.”

The research was stunning. 13 Proven Ways Saunas Can Improve Your Mental Health — Optimal Living Dynamics. In his first study, the participants had just one infrared sauna treatment and it reduced their symptoms by about 50%. In his follow-up study, he found that a single session caused a rapid and powerful antidepressant effect, and the benefits continued for six weeks, which was unexpected. He concluded that whole-body hyperthermia holds promise as a safe, rapid-acting, antidepressant treatment with a prolonged therapeutic benefit (57-58). Other researchers have looked at the effects of infrared sauna therapy on mildly depressed patients with fatigue, appetite loss, and mental complaints. They found that sauna treatment significantly increased their appetite and reduced their mental complaints (59).

Whole-body heat therapy has also been shown to reduce depression in cancer patients (60-61). And other research shows that sweating increases mental satisfaction and energy (62). 2. Not surprisingly, saunas can also reduce stress and anxiety. 3. University. MitoQ is backed by over a decade of research by scientists from around the world. Allergy symptoms and hair loss (but don’t forget iron) | THE LOW HISTAMINE CHEF. Those with hair loss combined with allergy like symptoms who do not test positive for allergies (via IgE) may have high levels of inflammatory mediators like histamine, prostaglandins and/or interleukins.

These inflammatory molecules are found in mast cells in the human body and are usually released as needed, but those with chronic allergies, high overall IgE level, histamine intolerance, mast cell activation, mastocytosis and other inflammatory medical conditions may have disturbances in mast cell function, thereby causing excess inflammation and hair loss. There’s a number of ways to tackle this, including some exciting news about a natural oil that’s more effective than minoxidil at promoting hair growth. All references further down in the post. There’s many different kinds of hair loss so it’s best to get to a doctor, but here are a few types that are specifically linked to inflammation: Interestingly I also found a study linking high serum ferritin with inflammation [15].

Be well, Internal Time: The Science of Chronotypes, Social Jet Lag, and Why You’re So Tired. By Maria Popova Debunking the social stigma around late risers, or what Einstein has to do with teens’ risk for smoking. “Six hours’ sleep for a man, seven for a woman, and eight for a fool,” Napoleon famously prescribed. (He would have scoffed at Einstein, then, who was known to require ten hours of sleep for optimal performance.) This perceived superiority of those who can get by on less sleep isn’t just something Napoleon shared with dictators like Hitler and Stalin, it’s an enduring attitude woven into our social norms and expectations, from proverbs about early birds to the basic scheduling structure of education and the workplace.

But in Internal Time: Chronotypes, Social Jet Lag, and Why You’re So Tired (public library), a fine addition to these 7 essential books on time, German chronobiologist Till Roenneberg demonstrates through a wealth of research that our sleep patterns have little to do with laziness and other such scorned character flaws, and everything to do with biology.

By Tetyana Obukhanych The cure for tetanus, a life-threatening and often deadly disease, has been sought from the very inception of the modern field of Immunology.

The original horse anti-serum treatment of tetanus was developed in the late 19th century and introduced into clinical practice at the time when a bio-statistical concept of a randomized placebo-controlled trial (RCT) did not yet exist. The therapy was infamous for generating a serious adverse reaction called serum sickness attributed to the intolerance of humans to horse-derived serum. To make this tetanus therapy usable, it was imperative to substitute the animal origin of anti-serum with the human origin. But injecting a lethal toxin into human volunteers as substitutes for horses would have been unthinkable. A practical solution was found in 1924: pre-treating the tetanus toxin with formaldehyde (a fixative chemical) made the toxin lose its ability to cause clinical tetanus symptoms.

EMDR Network. A Brief Description of EMDR Therapy The amount of time the complete treatment will take depends upon the history of the client. Complete treatment of the targets involves a three pronged protocol (1-past memories, 2-present disturbance, 3-future actions), and are needed to alleviate the symptoms and address the complete clinical picture. The goal of EMDR therapy is to process completely the experiences that are causing problems, and to include new ones that are needed for full health. "Processing" does not mean talking about it. "Processing" means setting up a learning state that will allow experiences that are causing problems to be "digested" and stored appropriately in your brain. Phase 1: History and Treatment Planning Generally takes 1-2 sessions at the beginning of therapy, and can continue throughout the therapy, especially if new problems are revealed. Phase 2: Preparation For most clients this will take only 1-4 sessions.

One of the great challenges in medicine is to understand the complexity of causes that lead to cancer. There is a great secret to life, health and disease, one that is little known, understood or talked about except in vague ways. This secret explains largely why one person gets sick and another does not under the influence of the same causes. Our bodies have a core, a central point, just like the solar system does. Without the sun at the heart of our system, the planets would just fly off because without a coherent center systems just don’t work.

The heart is a vast electromagnetic generator and the frequencies that are radiated out by the heart change dramatically depending on what emotional state a person is in. Most western-trained minds immediately think of the pump, that miracle muscle and yes, that is partly what is meant when the word heart is used. There are many things to eventually understand about this mysterious organ we call the heart. The Healing Light of Coherence Dr. The Medical Stigmata: 4 Signs You Are A Healer In Your Hands. But it is now known that some humans suffer from a lack of natural opiates in the brain, which causes them to seek the illegal remedy of heroin.

They are not really criminals; they just need medical supplements. Unfortunately, our lack of awareness sees heroin only as a moral issue, so the long-term solution to addiction, like a DMT (dimethyltryptomine), or a morphine supplement taken daily, is not allowed in our society. I don’t mean methadone that is sometimes prescribed, as a heroin substitute after a person is addicted, but a supplement that is given those that have an on-going opiate deficiency in their system, before they become addicted. It makes me sad because almost all our psychological pain is treatable and yet many of the treatments are forbidden to us. © 2005 — Stuart — All rights reserved.

Research Magazine – The University of Alabama » Going Viral: Surgeon, Professor Team in New Approach to Pain Treatment. By Chris BryantPhotos by Bryan Hester UA professor Carol Duffy, left, and Tuscaloosa surgeon William “Skip” Pridgen stand in Duffy’s UA lab. A chronic pain condition and numerous gastrointestinal disorders may all be caused by a virus. That’s a Tuscaloosa-based surgeon’s theory likely headed for a clinical trial early next year and one drawing support from a University of Alabama researcher who studies how viruses replicate. The theory of Dr. William “Skip” Pridgen, the physician, is now at the core of a start-up company, Innovative Med Concepts, which has already raised most of the capital needed to fund the Phase II clinical trial to test a novel pain-treatment therapy. Pridgen is the company’s president and managing partner. The clinical trial will test the effectiveness of a combination of two drugs in treating fibromyalgia, the chronic pain condition known both as a diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma.

“We are now in the final stages of accumulating investors,” Pridgen says. TheWetterWaterReport.
