April 7th, 2011 @ 19:30 Our bodies are 60% water, we vacation at seaside resorts with seemingly endless water and when we turn on the tap, water comes flowing out so fast that we don’t even have time to consider where it comes from. Despite the abundance of water all around us, this essential resource is quickly becoming scarce. The water crisis which encompasses the lack of access to drinking water as well as inadequate irrigation and agricultural solutions is becoming more severe, and around the world millions are seeing the effects of this on a daily basis. This new scarcity has lead to the term blue oil and the United Nations to deem water a fundamental human right. But these two terms may stand in stark contrast as all resources which are scarce also have a value and associated cost. Is it ethical to sell something which has been deemed a human right?

At this evening event we will take a look at the global water crisis and discuss some of these questions. IWA - Nutrient Recovery and Management 2011. Global Water Leakage Summit 2011 - Agenda. Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene | WSSCC. From 9-14 October 2011, the Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene in Mumbai, India, served as a leading platform to discuss and advance issues of importance to billions of people. In an address to Forum participants, WSSCC’s distinguished Chair, Prof . Anna Tibaijuka, stated that “a successful conference is a watershed of great things to come.”

In particular, she pointed to the successful Lake Victoria Region Water and Sanitation Initiative and Mekong Region Water and Sanitation Initiative established by UN-Habitat following WSSCC’s 2004 Global WASH Forum in Senegal. Seen in this light, the first Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene was a landmark event for the sector and a glimmer of a wave of change and potential yet to be realized. The Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene held 9-14 october 2011 in Mumbai, India, was not WSSCC’s first prominent global meeting. The world, however, has changed a lot since 2004 and this Forum was distinctive in many respects. 6th China International Water Business Summit. Www.bmbf.iwrm2011.de/_media/IWRM_Progr_final_Web.pdf. ASTEE actively contributes to the preparation of the 6th world water forum scheduled to be held from 12 to 17 October 2012 in Marseille.

This year exceptionally, this held us, in partnership with IWA and OECD, to have a special event in Bordeaux which will be the opportunity at national and international level to address burning issues, especially on the performance of water and sanitation utilities. Indeed ASTEE has been committed by the International Forum Committee to lead the forum’s preparation process on this critical issue. More than talks, even ambitious investments, only joint efforts in operation, maintenance, assets management, step by step efficiency improvements and consumers and citizen participatory processes will ensure a sustainable, fair, eco-aware and at an acceptable price service. French and international solutions in this field have to be highlighted, in a wide range of governance systems and organisations.
