Beware the rise of the government scientists turned lobbyists | George Monbiot. What happens to people when they become government science advisers? Are their children taken hostage? The current chief scientist at the UK's environment department, Ian Boyd, is so desperate to justify the impending badger cull – which defies the recommendations of the £49m study the department funded – that he now claims that eliminating badgers "may actually be positive to biodiversity", on the grounds that badgers sometimes eat baby birds.

9 september 2013 - Oud-Defensieminister Hans Hillen gaat strijden voor het particuliere HBO. Hij is voorgedragen als voorzitter van de NRTO, de lobbyorganisatie van de ‘private trainings- en opleidingsbureaus’. En lobbyen kan hij als de beste. De NRTO is geen kleine koepel, onderstreept de brancheorganisatie zelf. Uit onderzoek zou blijken, dat haar leden 85% van de 1,3 miljoen Nederlanders die privaat onderwijs volgen opleidt. Daarmee is zo’n €3,2 miljard per jaar gemoeid. Veel hogescholen zijn lid van de NRTO via hun particuliere bedrijf, dat niet-bekostigd HBO aanbiedt. Vouchersysteem stokt De NRTO heeft zich de voorbije jaren zeer beijverd om het deeltijd-HO in handen te krijgen. Rutte-II heeft dit voornemen doorgezet, maar de aanpak lijkt nu te stokken. Ervaren lobbyist Taak voor Hillen is dus hun belangen in dit proces scherp te bewaken en waar nodig OCW en de andere onderwijskoepels op te porren. Hans Hillen begon zijn loopbaan in het onderwijs.
Invloedrijk in Den Haag. The new Lobbying Bill will criminalise even basic campaigning by Trade Unions. Proposals in a bill slipped out as Parliament broke for the Summer, and due to be debated as soon as MPs return, will gag the TUC, trade unions and every campaign group in the country in what can only be seen as a “chilling attack on free speech”. The Transparency of Lobbying, non-Party Campaigning, and Trade Union Administration Bill will make organising the 2014 annual TUC Congress or organising a TUC national demonstration in the 12 months before the 2015 General Election into criminal offences. The Bill does this by making three changes to the regulation of campaigning by non-party organisation in the 12 months before a general election – breaching these will become a criminal offence: Changing the definition of what counts as campaigning – at present only activities designed with the intent of influencing an election result are regulated.

Maar aparte excellentieprogramma’s lossen dat probleem niet op, vindt HvA-docent Paul van der Bijl. Excellentie is hot. De HvA-onderwijsconferentie op 10 april is eraan gewijd. E.V.A. zag het levenslicht, de Excellentie Vereniging Amsterdam. Excellente studenten krijgen hele pagina’s in Folia. En in oktober is er een heuse Summit Excellentie in Amsterdam. Voor de duidelijkheid: ik heb alle begrip voor studenten die vinden dat hun huidige opleiding te weinig uitdaging biedt en balen van ongemotiveerde medestudenten in projectgroepen. Onderwijs op maat Ik zou veel liever zien dat opleidingen hun best doen om binnen het bestaande programma ruimte te bieden aan zowel de 5 die een 6 wil worden als aan de 8 die een 9 of een 10 wil worden. Niet dat het gebrek aan uitdagend onderwijs eenvoudig met meer tijd en geld is op te lossen. Makkelijk is het dus niet. Nog ondernemender HO, alsjeblieft.
24 januari 2012 - Er is “een stille revolutie van het ondernemerschap” gaande. 8% van de bevolking is inmiddels zelf ondernemer. Het kunstonderwijs is in het HO voortrekker. AWT en EL&I willen nog meer en steviger succes, zeker in HBO en WO. Voorzitter Jan Anthonie Bruijn kondigt aan dat zijn AWT samen met de Onderwijsraad een advies wil opstellen over de plaats van ondernemerschap in onderwijscurricula. In het hoger onderwijs is veel in gang gezet, vooral het kunstonderwijs heeft hier een grote vlucht genomen. Maar ruimte voor verbetering is er nog steeds in HBO en WO. Nederland scoort goed in ondernemerschap Dat beaamt EL&I topman Zonneveld, die overigens zeer positief is over de door hem genoemde "stille revolutie". Nederland scoort hoog als ondernemend land. Onderzoekers van de Universiteit Maastricht starten met een nieuw project waarbij voor de eerste keer in Nederland wetenschappelijk onderzoek gedaan gaat worden naar openbaar gemaakte documenten over de Nederlandse tabakslobby.
Het gaat om ruim 700 documenten uit de periode 2000-2011, bestaande uit correspondentie tussen de Nederlandse tabaksindustrie en de Nederlandse overheid, die afgelopen week toegankelijk zijn gemaakt door de Legacy Tobacco Documents Library (LTDL) van de Universiteit van Californië. Later dit jaar zullen naar verwachting nog veel meer documenten openbaar worden gemaakt die de periode 1990 – 2000 betreffen. De documenten zijn afkomstig uit de archieven van verschillende ministeries waaronder VWS, Economische Zaken en Financiën, en zijn in 2011 vrijgekomen naar aanleiding van twee grootschalige WOB-verzoeken van onderzoeksjournalist Joop Bouma van Dagblad Trouw. But lobbying money is flooding into Washington, DC, like never before. What’s going on? It was 4 o’clock in the afternoon, and I found myself hanging around the House-side entrance to the Capitol building, hoping to interview lawmakers during the protracted government shutdown in October. The members had been called by the Republican leadership to open just one portion of the government without authorizing funds for the Affordable Care Act, a partial solution that had rallied Democrats in opposition. As dusk settled in, I lingered to interview the representatives as they walked in and out of what everyone considered at this point to be a scene of political theater.
Many of the people assembled around me, I noticed, were former lawmakers and their associates. Behind me, I heard the distinctive croak of Zach Wamp, a former congressman who was busy talking up his new job to current members of Congress.
