Because Americans generally know little about how the politics of food and water play out beyond our borders we will focus on developments outside of the United States, and consider how scientific and technological knowledge contribute to these developments. Our goal will be to identify what the key issues are today, in order to take the next steps of deciding what kinds of questions we need to ask about the past, present, and future in order to address these pressing issues most effectively.
Among the points of departure you might start with are the coexistence of the dynamics of abundance (and obesity) in rich nations and of scarcity (and malnutrition) in poor ones; food security; genetically modified crops; bioprospecting/biopiracy; biofuels; tax and subsidy policies; access to safe drinking water; reclaiming wastewater; desalination; aquaculture ("fish farming"); water for irrigation; fossil fuels and agriculture; industrial meat production; and specific commodities such as tuna, salmon, coffee, quinoa, bananas, and chocolate.
Each of you will be responsible for searching for relevant articles, reports, and analyses to bookmark here, along with helping to organize the materials and provide comments that help others to use this resource effectively.

A new book, “Rich Food, Poor Food,” by Dr. Jayson Calton and Mira Calton, a certified nutritionist, explains how the Food and Drug Administration’s stamp of approval means little to other nations — and that much of what America is eating is actually considered cancerous in other nations.
