The Skills Most Entrepreneurs Lack - Bill J. Bonnstetter. By Bill J. Bonnstetter | 10:00 AM April 1, 2013 Entrepreneurs are a unique group of people, but they behave in patterns. In fact, as I recently wrote here on HBR, my firm’s research shows that most serial entrepreneurs display persuasion, leadership, personal accountability, goal orientation, and interpersonal skills. But in that same study, we also discovered a set of skills they do not possess. To rehash our methods, we assessed subjects identified as serial entrepreneurs on what personal skills they possessed. After analyzing the data, we found four distinct skills lacking in most serial entrepreneurs, three skills statistically significantly and one other also noticeably lacking. Empathy is one of the qualities serial entrepreneurs lack most. Entrepreneurial-minded people are not proficient in managing themselves and their time. This leads to another skill entrepreneurs lack: planning and organizing.

Carly Okyle Presented by Young Entrepreneurs Laura Entis Fear. 12 Traits Of The Perfect Entrepreneur. As a founder, I have learnt a lot of things. When I started my first company, I thought it was going to be a breeze. Yet I still wasn’t prepared. Building my second company taught me a lot about creating an idea (launch it lean or pitch it first), meeting with investors, building a team, doing deals with partners, marketing and social media.

More importantly, I learnt valuable lessons about being an entrepreneur. Risk Taker. Written by Wanda Chiuri Adapted from 12 Traits Of The Perfect Entrepreneur, published in Women 2.0 The truth is there are relatively few entrepreneurs that have all the skills listed in above, yet their businesses are not only surviving, but their ideas are flourishing. Why Startup Founders are Always Unhappy — jessblog. Startups are incredibly stressful. I know many founders whose companies are doing great, but they are still stressed and unhappy. Polyvore is doing great (growing fast and cash-flow positive!) , but I still have my moments of extreme unhappiness. Here’s my theory on why this happens. The trajectory of a successful startup looks something like this, up and to the right: It’s not a smooth, straight ride though. There are ups & downs along the way. If you’re lucky enough to have gotten from point A to point B on this graph, you should be happy, right?

Unfortunately, humans are terrible at understanding absolute values. My theory is that a founder’s happiness is tied to the rate of change of their startup’s success. Even though point B is 2x better than point A in terms of success, it is a deceleration from the moment before. Some tips to keep from drowning when your happiness is below the line — 1) Remember where you came from. 2) Great culture and great people are your glue. Musique - E.P (Part 1.0) - Need Her (feat. Quitting your job after you just spent your savings buying an apt in NYC is another level of scary.

That is exactly what I did when I left my banking job to start my own company. It’s a familiar story. Like most entrepreneurs who leave their day jobs, I encountered the usual criticism. Entrepreneurs as DissidentsWhen Steve Jobs returned to Apple, he ran the Think Different ads, a brilliant marketing campaign to make Apple’s core customers believe that Apple was still fighting for the brand. But in hindsight, the ad captured something much more profound.

The crazy ones? Because without dissent there is no creativity. Countries that stifle dissent while attempting to encourage entrepreneurship will end up at a competitive disadvantage. Pushing the boundariesMost startups solve problems in existing markets – making something better than what existed before.

Entrepreneur: The Newest Superhero. Why Give a Damn: In a world in trouble, entrepreneurs are our best hope of implementing solutions to the crises facing us and bringing prosperity to our communities. On a planet beset with recession, erosion of all major ecosystems, the climate crisis, and political instability, it is clear that governments are incapable of implementing needed solutions, large companies are committed to preserving their incumbency, and citizens too unorganized to respond effectively.

Governments are high-centered, wheels spinning pathetically in thin air. The recent UN meeting, Rio+20, was supposed to be a world summit of global leaders. Mr. Obama didn’t even bother to attend. Many government delegations “bracketed” language agreed to 20 years ago at the first Rio Earth Summit – meaning that they no longer agree to abide by even those weak commitments. The world seems a deer in the headlights. Enter the entrepreneur.
