Steven G. Brant: The United Corporate States Of America

(If you missed seeing his Special Comment, the video is at the end of this essay.) The United Corporate States Of America. It's a pretty frightening vision, one where every politician is completely bought and paid for by corporate interests. But it's also frightening because it includes the end of any source of information -- either from the Left or the Right -- that challenges what the wholly corporate-owned political puppets throughout America do. After all, why would corporations finance anything that speaks negatively of their agenda to control our country and make as much money while doing so as possible?

That's right, in a corporate controlled world -- as Keith sees it -- there won't be any desire for citizens to be "informed" in such a way that they might think anything needs to be done differently than is currently being done. Oct. 12, 2011 | by Stan Pugsley Occupy Wall Street certainly has emotional roots in the wreckage of the financial meltdown of 2008, and it has philosophical roots in Tahrir Square and other recent uprisings around the world. But what was the initial spark that created the movement here in the United States, and how did it spread? iCrossing conducted a detailed review of the digital trail of the Occupy Wall Street movement and found some fascinating trends: * Each instance of the movement initially emerged in social media * A gestation period followed with organizers shaping ideas and collecting feedback * On key dates, social media exploded at the same time that offline activity emerged * With each new city and country, the cycle has compressed into a shorter period This cycle demonstrates that viral activity is not an instantaneous event.

Dissent can be personal, collective, creative — whatever you want it to be. Revolt can be physical or spectral, a blackspot on a corporate logo or a digital mindbomb posted online. Adbusters' Kalle Lasn: the flawed genius behind Occupy Wall Street. This is the story of the man who inspired the OccupyWallStreet movement, the man who perhaps has been dreaming of a movement like this for 20 years, a movement that may outpace The Tea Party in terms of its impact on the global psyche.

Adbusters' Kalle Lasn: the flawed genius behind Occupy Wall Street

That man is Kalle Lasn, a stout, rugged-looking, white-haired radical, who looks like a farmer, wears gum boots into his office and talks like a philosopher with a pronounced Baltic accent. He reads voraciously, grows apples and loves design, economics, sustainability, and art. His is a life of ideas, but his story is an inspirational tale of truth. It's a parable about how intention resonates when cultivated as fiercely as his has been over many years. And how, despite all the ambient noise in our culture and how entrenched power has become, how one person's intention can inspire a mass movement. This is also a story about timing. Timing is everything, and Kalle Lasn's time has come. Occupy Wall Street: An interview with Kalle Lasn, the man behind it all - BlogPost. An ad Adbusters ran in July.

(Image via Adbusters) Back in July, an idea by Kalle Lasn and his colleagues at Adbusters, a nonprofit magazine run by social activists, had started to come together. For months, Lasn had noticed among his 120,000 readers an unresolved anger that wasn’t finding expression. He observed that young people were starting to say they worried about having a “black hole future” ahead of them, and it suddenly felt, he said, “like a Tahrir moment in America was eminently possible.”

Kalle Lasn. Kalle Lasn (Estonian pronunciation: [ˈkɑlˑɛ ˈlɑsn̥]) (born March 24, 1942) is an Estonian-Canadian film maker, author, magazine editor and activist.

Kalle Lasn

Near the end of World War II his family fled Estonia and Lasn spent some time in a German refugee camp. At age seven he was resettled in Australia with his family, where he grew up and remained until the late 1960s, attending school in Canberra. In the late 1960s, he founded a market research company in Tokyo, and in 1970, moved to Vancouver, Canada. For twenty years, he produced documentaries for PBS and Canada’s National Film Board. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia.[1] Books and films[edit] The Architect of #OccupyWallStreet Praises the Power of "Magical Hashtags" The #occupywallstreet movement didn't spring up out of nowhere.

It was very deliberately conceived by the creators of a title you may have seen on the newsstand: Adbusters. As digital marketing agency iCrossing recently outlined, the movement started with a tweet from Adbusters on July 4. After that, the Vancouver-based Adbusters continued to tweet about #occupywallstreet, but received almost no mainstream media coverage. All that changed on Sept. 17, when crowds showed up at New York City's Zuccotti Park and stayed there for weeks. LIVE from Occupy Wall Street: Talking with an #OccupyWallStreet Organizer. While up on the visitors' gallery, looking down on the trading floors, they threw US legal tender - coins and bills - at the men below who, when they realised what it was, began diving for dollars. That colourful assault on the money culture took place 40 years ago on August 24, 1967. CNN recently remembered the moment, noting: "Some of the brokers, clerks and stock runners below laughed and waved; others jeered angrily and shook their fists. " Occupy Wall St Behind the Scenes. Egypt’s Top ‘Facebook Revolutionary’ Now Advising Occupy Wall Street. One of the key activists behind Egypt's "Facebook Revolution" is now giving advice to a new group of protesters: the Occupy Wall Street movement. The protesters in New York's Zuccotti Park – and their offshoots around the country – often cite the mass demonstrations earlier this year in Cairo's Tahrir Square as their inspiration.

So maybe it shouldn't be much of a surprise that Ahmed Maher, one of the leading figures in those Egyptian protests, has been corresponding for weeks with the Occupy Wall Streeters, whom he calls "our brothers. " Maher is one of the founders of the April 6 Youth, which used Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to galvanize Egyptians against President Hosni Mubarak. Recently, however, his attention has turned toward America, where he's been chatting online with Occupy activists. Those conversations center around practical advice from a successful Egyptian revolutionary. Occupy Wall Street: The Book.
