How journalists are using Facebook, Twitter to write mini serial narratives. Since the mid 1990s I’ve been experimenting with serial narratives, stories of more than one serving, in which parts or episodes often end in cliffhangers, driving the reader or viewer to the next installment.
Serial stories dominate American culture and are expressed in television stories such as “Glee” or “The Sopranos”; in book publishing with the Harry Potter series or “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” trilogy; in reality television (in which someone is always thrown off the island, or given a rose, or breaks the scale, or becomes the weakest link). iStockphoto. ROTC policy on Wikileaks threatens academic freedom.
Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Newly graduated and commissioned officers of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) Unit Hampton Roads stand at attention as they are applauded during the spring Commissioning Ceremony in May 2004.
The Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) is a college-based program for training commissioned officers of the United States Armed Forces.[1][2][3] ROTC officers serve in all branches of the U.S. armed forces (although the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard do not have their own respective ROTC programs, graduates of ROTC programs do currently serve as Marine Corps and Coast Guard officers).
In 2010, ROTC graduates constituted 38.5 percent of newly commissioned U.S. Army officers, 1.8 percent of newly commissioned U.S. Emily Bell Views-led news sparks identity crisis. Here comes Piers ... is the US ready for Morgan's CNN show?

TimeKeeper. Amazon realises it is selling anti-Amazon book - Censors it. Online book seller Amazon has taken down an ebook which dishes the dirt on its best seller ranking system.
The Day the Kindle Died, detailed a six-month investigative effort to document how it was possible to get into Amazon's best-seller list by faking reviews, promotes inaccurate sales ranking and bestseller lists. The book was penned by Thomas Hertog who told us that he came up with a cunning plan when he was trying to flog his financial advice book called Wealth Hazards. As we pointed out before Christmas over five months all he had to do was buy and download his book to his Kindle 173 times. He has also written 42 customer reviews that he voted on one hundred and eight times to raise the ranking on Amazon's bestseller list and recommendation lists. However it seems that Amazon reads TechEye and decided that having Hertog's book on its lists was a little embarrassing. Thought Leader » Bert Olivier » Panopticism, Facebook, the 'information bomb', and Wikileaks. In previous posts, I have argued that, at this stage, the subtle and not-so-subtle ways in which Facebook has succeeded in exposing users to more (potential, if not probable) attention from companies marketing commodities or services than they probably anticipated, have no more than financial or economic objectives, but that the potential for extensive social control or psychological manipulation is vast.
Moreover, just as, in the panoptical prison, where inmates monitor their own behaviour (on the assumption of their constant surveillance by warders with full visual access to them), indications are that individuals are increasingly engaging in a form of “normalising” self-monitoring of behaviour via voluntary self-exposure on internet sites such as Facebook. The same is true, in a related manner, of “normalising judgement” and the “examination’. What led Virilio to this insight? Presents Master Class - OWN TV. Piers Morgan - CNN.com Blogs. LEAKED: AOL's Master Plan. Explain yourself: George Lakoff, cognitive linguist. As part of our research on explanatory journalism, we’re interviewing experts in fields outside journalism about their approaches to explaining complex systems to non-specialtists. Our first expert is cognitive linguist George Lakoff, who did groundbreaking research on the embodiment of thought and language and the way people think using metaphors.
For Lakoff, language is not a neutral system of communication, because it is always based on frames, conceptual metaphors, narratives, and emotions. Political thought and language is inherently moral and emotional. The basic phrases journalists use every day—words like “liberty” “freedom” “immigrant” “taxes”— are essentially contested concepts that have radically different meanings for different Americans. Buytendijklezing 2011. University funding is set to become more political. The countdown to the London Olympics is under way – the diminishing days constantly circling the Post Office Tower in flickering lights (and probably being counted down in lots of other places across the capital).
Just a few weeks after the – no doubt spectacular – closing ceremony, universities and colleges will be charging students much higher fees covering a large part of, all or even more than the cost of their higher education. But no one will be celebrating. The comparison with the Olympic Games highlights just how short a time institutions have to set fee levels, publicise their fees, determine any discounts, establish bursaries and scholarships and, finally, create systems to manage the whole package. But first the government has to take some key decisions about the rules, and publish a white paper.
Until it does so, higher education can do little but prepare speculative scenarios. Het academische klimaat wordt uitgehold. Gisteren kondigde het College van Bestuur (CvB) in de vergadering met de Universitaire Studentenraad en de Ondernemingsraad aan dat het zich beraadt op herziening van FONDS. Narrative journalism is the interpretation of a story and the way in which the journalist portrays it, be it fictional or non-fictional. In easier words, it tells a story. Narrative journalism is also commonly referred to as literary journalism, which is defined as creative nonfiction that, if well written, contains accurate and well-researched information and also holds the interest of the reader.
It is also related to immersion journalism, where a writer follows a subject or theme for a long period of time (weeks or months) and details an individual's experiences from a deeply personal perspective. History[edit] Truman Capote's In Cold Blood is a historic example of narrative journalism in novel form. De journalist als toomler: journalistiek in de netwerksamenleving.

Ask a former paperboy about the job, and you're likely to summon a misty-eyed recollection of predawn bundling and knee-high snow. "It meant a lot to me as a kid," Today host Matt Lauer said of his first job. "Today it's basically something that doesn't exist. " With physical newspapers making their way to an ever shrinking number of customers, paperboys (and girls) have become an endangered species.
In 2008 they made up just 13% of newspaper deliverers, down from nearly 70% in 1990. One reason for their demise: as cost-conscious newspaper companies shifted to large distribution centers, their carriers had to deliver bigger bundles of papers across a wider area. " Guardian's Moscow correspondent expelled from Russia. The Guardian's Moscow correspondent has been expelled from Russia, in what is believed to be the first removal of a British staff journalist from the country since the end of the cold war.
Luke Harding's forced departure comes after the newspaper's reporting of the WikiLeaks cables, where he reported on allegations that Russia under the rule of Vladimir Putin had become a "virtual mafia state". The journalist flew back to Moscow at the weekend after a two-month stint reporting on the contents of the leaked US diplomatic cables from London, but was refused entry when his passport was checked on his arrival. After spending 45 minutes in an airport cell, he was sent back to the UK on the first available plane – with his visa annulled and his passport only returned to him after taking his seat.
