The worsening journalistic disgrace at Wired - Glenn Greenwald - Salon.com - www.salon.com. For more than six months, Wired‘s Senior Editor Kevin Poulsen has possessed — but refuses to publish — the key evidence in one of the year’s most significant political stories: the arrest of U.S. Army PFC Bradley Manning for allegedly acting as WikiLeaks’ source. In late May, Adrian Lamo — at the same time he was working with the FBI as a government informant against Manning — gave Poulsen what he purported to be the full chat logs between Manning and Lamo in which the Army Private allegedly confessed to having been the source for the various cables, documents and video that WikiLeaks released throughout this year.

In interviews with me in June, both Poulsen and Lamo confirmed that Lamo placed no substantive restrictions on Poulsen with regard to the chat logs: Wired was and remains free to publish the logs in their entirety. Despite that, on June 10, Wired published what it said was only “about 25 percent” of those logs, excerpts that it hand-picked. Mr. A former top U.S. Merged Manning-Lamo Chat Logs | Firedoglake - firedoglake.com. The strange and consequential case of Bradley Manning, Adrian Lamo and WikiLeaks - Glenn Greenwald. On June 6, Kevin Poulsen and Kim Zetter of Wired reported that a 22-year-old U.S. Army Private in Iraq, Bradley Manning, had been detained after he “boasted” in an Internet chat — with convicted computer hacker Adrian Lamo — of leaking to WikiLeaks the now famous Apache Helicopter attack video, a yet-to-be-published video of a civilian-killing air attack in Afghanistan, and “hundreds of thousands of classified State Department records.”

Lamo, who holds himself out as a “journalist” and told Manning he was one, acted instead as government informant, notifying federal authorities of what Manning allegedly told him, and then proceeded to question Manning for days as he met with federal agents, leading to Manning’s detention. From the start, this whole story was quite strange for numerous reasons. Reviewing everything that is known ultimately raises more questions than it answers. Below is my perspective on what happened here. But there is one fact to keep in mind at the outset.

Wikileaks: a somewhat less redacted version of the Lamo/Manning logs. We just received this from a source requesting anonymity. It purports to be a more complete transcript of a portion of Army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning's conversation with Adrian Lamo, the hacker who reported Manning to authorities. Released in part by Wired News, and excerpted in part in a Washington Post story, the remainder was said to contain information of potential national security import. However, we don't see material of that nature in the portion of the transcript we were sent here, and neither can our lawyers. Update: We have removed a few words regarding specifics of personal issues not directly related to the whistleblowing/national security concerns at hand. Some of the sections which, as far as I can tell, haven't been published in "raw" form are in bold. There's a reference here to "confession" on Manning's part.

Transcript of the alleged log between Lamo and Manning as sent to Wikileaks by Lamo. . (12:22:49 PM) bradass87: the air-gap has been penetrated... Official record reveals truth behind Lamo's Asperger incident. Last year Adrian Lamo, the ethical hacker who would turn-in Bradley Manning, did something contrary to his nature. He and Kevin Poulsen of Wired News published an article and Adrian knowingly included falsifications in his story. The article I am referring to is "Ex-Hacker Adrian Lamo Institutionalized for Asperger’s" published May 20, the day before Manning allegedly first contacted Adrian via email. This particular article would get a lot of attention the following month after the public learned about Bradley Manning and after Adrian let it be known that he was responsible for identifying Manning as the source of the leaks.

It was odd that the primary witness against Manning had only weeks before been involuntarily hospitalized for apparent psychiatric reasons. Conspiracy theories were born. Was Adrian extorted by US Intelligence officials to incriminate Manning? To put an end to wild speculation I decided to try to obtain a police report. Adrian lied – but why does it matter?
