It Takes a Quiz Show Host: #Occupygezi and Culture Jamming aganist CensorshipTurkey

Many media outlets aired irrelevant documentaries and talk shows (talk show about legal definitions of theft, cooking shows, dolphin training, etc) while clashes spread to dozens of provinces and many neighborhoods in many major cities. In fact, CNN Turkey’s (owned by Time Warner and Turkish Dogan media group) airing of “penguin” documentaries during intense clashes (while CNN International reported news from Turkey!) Became a protest meme. A prominent actor used his interview on CNN to wear a penguin shirt and desperate Turks tried to lure CNN Turkey back to news by photoshopping penguins into protest pictures: Perhaps one of the most striking attempts to pierce and criticize the veil of censorship on Turkish media came from a quiz show host, Ali İhsan Varol, whose “Guess the Word” program airs on weeknights. 47-The guide to laws: LAWYER.

We approached them very carefully making it clear that we were not protesters. As soon as they saw us they grabbed us very forcefully and pushed us against a wall. We explained who we were and what we were trying to do but they proceeded to treat us very badly. My student - a Turkish citizen - was pushed on the ground and beaten around his stomach and buttocks with batons.

They then told him they were not interested in him and kicked him to the other side of the street where he was able to escape. Dear sir/madam, #Resistanbul Day 11 / Tear Gas & Peaceful Protest. With misguided beliefs on the definition of "development", they plot the demise of one of the last bastions of green refuge in the heart of Turkey, Gezi Park. In trying to carry out that wish, the ADK assault their very own democratically active citizens with weaponry and officers whose sole purpose is to, ironically, protect those very same Turkish people.

This could be about a park. This could be about the violence unleashed against our friends, adversaries, neighbours and strangers. This could be about couples' personal freedoms. What this is, is a clear message that people treat each other with respect, and as soon as one person dies at the hands of police forces attacking political opponents and demonstrators, this is a crime that should be as great as treason. Protesters are pouring into Taksim Square, Gezi Park, and other public spaces throughout the country in the thousands to reject neoliberalism and government-backed urban gentrification. As they brave vomit-inducing tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons, and live ammunition, it is clear that the people of Turkey are demanding much more than simply the conservation of Istanbul’s precious remaining green space. Rather, what we are witnessing in Turkey is a broad movement of people from various classes, ages, religious sects, and political backgrounds calling for real democracy. It is also imperative to contextualize this recent uprising as a continuation of many struggles that Turkish citizens have undertaken for years around economic justice, rights of minorities (including the Kurdish people), and resistance to mandatory military service.

Turkey protesters demand dismissal of police chiefs. 5 June 2013 Last updated at 08:20 ET The BBC's Mark Lowen: "It is an extremely important set of negotiations" Activists in Turkey have demanded the sacking of police chiefs in Istanbul, Ankara and other cities over their forces' violent responses to protests. They also rejected an apology by Deputy PM Bulent Arinc, saying his remarks "were reminiscent of a civil war". A group calling itself the Taksim Solidarity Platform (TSP) said it had handed a list of demands to Mr Arinc. The crackdown on protests over the redevelopment of a park in Istanbul last week triggered nationwide unrest.

Overnight, police in Istanbul again fired tear gas, water cannon and smoke grenades at protesters. 'Responsible for violence' The demands presented by the Taksim Solidarity Platform on Wednesday included a ban on the use of tear gas, the release of detained protesters, and the scrapping of the plans for the redevelopment of Gezi Park, which is part of Istanbul's Taksim Square.

Anti-government protests raged on in Istanbul today, even after the deputy prime minister issued an apology for "excessive force" used by police against demonstrators. The protests, the biggest in Turkey in recent years, were sparked by the police crackdown on Friday of a peaceful sit-in to prevent the demolition of a park in Istanbul.

Thousands later joined anti-government rallies across Turkey to voice discontent with the 10-year rule of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Turkey's state-run news agency said police have detained 25 people for "spreading untrue information" on social media and provoking protests. The Anadolu Agency says Wednesday the people were detained in the city of Izmir for allegedly "inciting the people to enmity and hate. " It said police were still looking for 13 others. Turkey's main broadcast media have been criticized for shunning the coverage of police brutality at the protest onset on Friday. Shops damaged 'Starting a war' With files from The Associated Press.
