Above Photo: By Gallo Images / Sowetan / Thulani Mbele A multimillion-dollar campaign to stifle protest in universities. As far-right speakers face loud student opposition at their university speaking gigs, conservative lawmakers in several states are introducing legislation that cracks down on protesters. As uncovered by UnKoch My Campus’ Ralph Wilson, numerous states have borrowed their so-called “campus free speech” bills from the rightwing Goldwater Institute, which is funded by conservative plutocrats including Charles Koch and the Mercer family.

The intent of these bills isn’t to protect student speech; it’s actually to suppress it in favor of guest speakers who, at times, support white nationalism, LGBTQ discrimination and other hateful worldviews. By funding the Phoenix-based Goldwater Institute, wealthy conservatives are enabling the promotion of hate speech while stifling student dissent. Photo Credit: Max Borge, Flickr Last month, the Washington Post gave a glowing front-page boost to an anonymous online blacklist of hundreds of American websites, from marginal conspiracy sites to flagship libertarian and progressive publications. As Max Blumenthal reported for AlterNet, the anonymous website argued that all of them should be investigated by the federal government and potentially prosecuted under the Espionage Act as Russian spies, for wittingly or unwittingly spreading Russian propaganda.

My own satirical newspaper was raided and closed down by the Kremlin in 2008, on charges of “extremism”—akin to terrorism—which I took seriously enough to leave for home for good. What the Washington Post did in boosting an anonymous blacklist of American journalists accused of criminal treason is one of the sleaziest, and most disturbing (in a very familiar Kremlin way) things I’ve seen in this country since I fled for home. Historic Event. 3 Popular Mainstream Media Journalists Come Together & Tell The Truth About Tell-Lie-Vision. The world is changing so fast, and many people, at least in the developed world, are starting to see through corporately owned mainstream media. They’ve been caught red handed ‘faking’ and lying about major global events on multiple occasions, and now, some of their employees are leaving their jobs and telling the truth about something that dominates a large portion of mainstream media.

That being said, it’s clear that not every single thing we see on mainstream western television is a lie, but it seems that much of it is or at least has corporate and political bias’ behind it, especially when it comes to major global events like war and terrorism. It’s unfortunate that our world has been plagued by political agendas, and that the infiltration of media has become out of control. Further, it’s disturbing to think that only a handful of corporations run and control mainstream media. Below is a list of three of the most recent examples. Dr. Dr. Here is the full interview: Sharyl Attkisson. Untitled. Administrators at one California high school reacted in all the wrong ways when student reporters tried to write a newspaper article about the recent dismissal of a popular teacher and debate coach.

San Gabriel High School principal Jim Schofield sent an email telling newspaper adviser Jennifer Kim to kill the story and suggested running a fluffy profile piece instead. Kim backed her students when they wanted to fight for their right to publish, and she was later suspended and remains on indefinite administrative leave.

Officials from San Gabriel High and the Alhambra Unified School District declined to comment. The free speech rights of public high school students can be a complicated matter, so Reason TV brought in Ken White, a First Amendment attorney, blogger at Popehat, and Reason contributing editor, to parse some of legal issues. WEATHER SERVICE EMPLOYEES TETHERED BY ILLEGAL GAG ORDERS - As more and more people are becoming aware of the aerosol spraying of our skies, the power structure is tightening the lid.

NWSEO Executive Vice President Bill Hopkins. “As a taxpayer, I find it highly disturbing that a government agency continues to push gag orders to hide how they operate. This is the work of the American government, owned by the American public, and should be open to the American public.” “The National Weather Service is about the last place where national security-style secrecy rules need to be enforced,” stated PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch, noting that the broad scope of the gag orders put much of what goes on inside the agency under wraps.

“Everyone is free to talk about the weather except for the people working inside the National Weather Service. Imposition of a nondisclosure policy or order not meeting WPEA requirements is classified as a “prohibited personnel practice” contravening fundamental tenets of the federal merit system. InShare0. Court Forbids F.D.A. From Blocking Truthful Promotion of Drug. A federal judge said on Friday that the Food and Drug Administration could not prohibit the truthful promotion of a drug for unapproved uses because doing so would violate the protection of free speech. The decision, by a district judge in Manhattan, could inhibit the ability of the to regulate one aspect of pharmaceutical marketing. Pharmaceutical companies have collectively paid billions of dollars in fines in recent years after being accused of marketing drugs for unapproved uses.

Lawyers who represent pharmaceutical companies said it was too soon to say how far-reaching the ruling would be, in part because technically it applies only to the district in which it was handed down. Also, while the F.D.A. declined to comment, the lawyers said they expected the agency to appeal. For now, some said, pharmaceutical manufacturers would probably remain cautious about openly promoting their products for unapproved uses. The French Interior Ministry on Monday ordered that five websites be blocked on the grounds that they promote or advocate terrorism. “I do not want to see sites that could lead people to take up arms on the Internet,” proclaimed Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve. When the block functions properly, visitors to those banned sites, rather than accessing the content of the sites they chose to visit, will be automatically redirected to the Interior Ministry website.

There, they will be greeted by a graphic of a large red hand, and text informing them that they were attempting to access a site that causes or promotes terrorism: “you are being redirected to this official website since your computer was about to connect with a page that provokes terrorist acts or condones terrorism publicly.” No judge reviews the Interior Ministry’s decisions. There can be no doubt that such new criminal laws are specifically intended to ban ideas these governments dislike. Google Moving to Shut Down Alternative Media by Ranking Sites on “Facts” Rather than Popularity. Search Engine giant Google, the major driver of traffic to the majority of media portals is moving to change the way it ranks websites, declaring that it intends to use known partisan debunking outlets to determine the “truthfulness” of content. Currently, Google rankings are determined by the number of incoming links to a web page, meaning that if a story becomes popular it can be driven to the top of search results, and by viewed by millions of people.

However, this is a little too democratic for the liking of some, who only like to get their “facts” from pre-approved sources. The proposed solution, according to a Google funded research team is to compute a“Knowledge-Based Trust score” for every web page, based on Google’s own “Knowledge Vault”, an automated database that determines “facts the web unanimously agrees on,” according to the New Scientist. “A source that has few false facts is considered to be trustworthy,” says the research team. Freed CIA Whistleblower John Kiriakou Says "I Would Do It All Again" From the YouTube description: In 2007, John Kiriakou became the first CIA official to publicly confirm and detail the Bush administration’s use of waterboarding.

He’s just been released from prison to serve the remaining three months of his 30-month sentence under house arrest, and joins us from his home in Virginia. When asked if he thinks NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden would receive a fair trial if he returns to the United States, Kiriakou responds, “Not under any circumstances. … I think the deck is stacked against him as it is against any whistleblower.”

He responds to details of the partially released Senate Committee Report on the CIA’s use of torture, such as the use of forced rectal feeding, by calling for the prosecution of those involved. “Those were not approved interrogation techniques. Why aren’t those officers being prosecuted?” EXPOSED: Governments Pay News Networks To FAKE Stories All The Time. “The news isn't there to tell you what happened. It's there to tell you what it wants you to hear or what it thinks you want to hear.” - Joss Whedon This week, news reporter Brian Williams created global controversy when he admitted to lying about being in a helicopter crash in Iraq.

His admission is just the most recent revelation in a long line of situations that have exposed the corruption that exists within the mainstream media. While it is fairly common for reporters like Williams to get caught up in lies, it is equally common for mainstream media whistleblowers to leave their jobs and speak out against what they had seen. Amber Lyon, for example, is an investigative journalist and photographer, who is most well known for her work reporting human rights abuses against pro-democracy protesters in Bahrain. Would King have gone on to give his "I have a dream speech" in August, win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and change American history? Some Americans would insist that suppressing news about King's arrest during the Birmingham protests simply couldn't happen here because we have a free press that -- for all its faults -- knows a good story when it sees one. Wouldn't that be a story? But what if I told you that the New York Times wasn't interested at all? Yet, it was studiously ignored by nearly all the New York media.

Charlie Hebdo Fired ‘Anti-Semitic’ Cartoonist For Ridiculing Judaism In 2009. January 14th, 2015 | by hqanon Politics The cartoon world’s double standards on freedom of speech… Charlie Hebdo mocks the prophet Muhammad through insulting cartoons and calls it satire. As a result, half of the magazine’s staff is wiped out by terrorists in the name of Allah. The massacre raises questions about “freedom of speech.” When the world was condemning the January 7th attack on the satirical magazine, Muslim heroes were being applauded and world leaders and dignitaries were walking in a march for unity, although it was not shoulder to shoulder: Critics suggest images show dignitaries ‘didn’t lead march’ after all, but many still speak positively about display of global unity Then came the breaking news – a reminder that 80-year-old Maurice Sinet, political cartoonist with Charlie Hebdo for 20 years, was fired in 2009 for his anti-Semitic cartoons mocking the relationship of former French President Sarkozy’s son with a wealthy Jewish woman.

This week, journalist Barrett Brown was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for reporting on information that was revealed in hacked documents. Brown has spent the past two years in prison awaiting his trail, so he still has 35 months of his term left to serve. Federal investigators accused Brown of being a “spokesperson for anonymous” simply for reporting on information that they hacked and being loosely supportive of them. In a powerful statement released just after his sentencing, Brown wrote the following: Good news! — The U.S. government decided today that because I did such a good job investigating the cyber-industrial complex, they’re now going to send me to investigate the prison-industrial complex. This case and this sentence have heavy implications for the world of journalism, and is a blatant attack on the free press.

In an earlier statement speaking of his decision to reject a plea deal, Brown talked about these dangerous implications, saying that: Trending on the Web. On not understanding "Charlie:" Why many smart people are getting it wrong. Many smart people are getting a flawed picture of Charlie Hebdo. They are concluding, based on simplistic and misleading analysis, that many of the magazine covers and cartoons promoted racist views. In fact, as I will show, some of the covers elaborately lampooned racist views of right wing parties, like Front National, by imitating some of their imagery, inserting snarky comments, and even posting mock party logos next to the images.

Therefore, it would be clear to pretty much any French readers that they were making fun of these things. However, people unfamiliar with the details of this rather elaborate satirical humor are now pulling these images off the internet and claiming them as evidence that Charlie Hebdo promoted the very racist views that they were in fact lampooning. So, I think it is important that we set the record straight. Here are a few things you may not know. I will start with a little bit of background information.
