In 1987, Ferrari celebrated their 40th anniversary, and to mark the occasion launched arguably their most uncompromising road car ever – the twin-turbocharged 471-bhp, 201-mph F40.
Borrowing heavily from technology developed for the still-born Group B 288 GTO Evoluzione programme, it was no surprise when the evocatively named F40 LM finally hit the track in 1989 – albeit at the behest of the French Ferrari importer Charles Pozzi rather than the factory itself. Developed by Michelotto, the F40 LM benefitted from enlarged twin IHI turbocharger/ intercooler units and advanced Weber-Marelli fuel injection, which increased power to over 700 bhp. A corresponding reduction in weight to just 1,050 kg resulted in predictably awesome performance, whilst the car also featured extensive chassis stiffening, race-specification transmission, uprated brakes and extensively modified bodywork. Welcome To The Wasteland: The Great American Junkyard. I think it’s safe to say that California might be the junkyard capital of the world.
Not only does its mild climate help to preserve cars that might be completely scrapped in other locales, but the sheer number of vehicles that have traveled California’s roads ensure a massive supply of donor cars and parts. But with that said, heading down to your local Pick-A-Part surely isn’t what it used to be. These days, most of the public wrecking yards in California are packed full of Saturns, Cavaliers and other crappy cars from the ’90s. Yuck! That’s not to say you won’t find cool cars occasionally, but the days of going to the junkyard and being presented with row upon row of cool vintage machinery and parts from yesteryear seem to be gone. Or at least that’s what I thought. I’m talking about Turner’s Auto Wrecking, located in the heart of the Central Valley, just outside of Fresno. With acres and acres of automobiles to see, there was no time to waste.
