Finding a Book When You've Forgotten Its Title

This is an update of a previous post by Sharon Rickson. It can be tough to remember the title and author of a book you read a long time ago—even if it was a book that was really important to you. Fiction is cataloged by author and title, not by subject or plot line, which makes identifying books by just their storyline difficult. Readers often ask librarians for help finding these kinds of books. And we can’t figure out the mystery every single time, but we do have a few tricks to help find the answer.

Skimming & Scanning -TIP Sheet. TIP sheetSKIMMING & SCANNING Skimming and scanning are reading techniques that use rapid eye movement and keywords to move quickly through text for slightly different purposes.

Skimming & Scanning -TIP Sheet

Skimming is reading rapidly in order to get a general overview of the material. Scanning is reading rapidly in order to find specific facts. While skimming tells you what general information is within a section, scanning helps you locate a particular fact. Skimming is like snorkeling, and scanning is more like pearl diving. Sean Spicer reads The Onion, but maybe not too closely. We all had some fun laughing at White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s inexplicable crusade against Dippin’ Dots last week, and now he’s already doing another weird thing on Twitter.

Sean Spicer reads The Onion, but maybe not too closely

Earlier today, the official Twitter account for The Onion—our sister site and America’s finest news source—posted a video titled “5 Things To Know About Sean Spicer.” The tweet mentions that his role is “to provide the American public with robust and clearly articulated misinformation,” which is the sort of subtle Onion joke that isn’t so much “funny” as it is “definitely true.” However, it turns out that the joke was even more accurate than you’d think.

The tweet tagged Spicer’s account, and rather than ignoring the dig at the Trump administration’s already well-established fondness for obscuring reality, he responded by saying “you nailed it.” Either way, it’s nice to see The Onion get a shoutout! [via NYMag] [Note: The Onion, like The A.V.

Comics. Manga. NEW BOBBINS - comic for November 8, 2014 by John Allison.

The survivors leave Atlanta and travel across hostile territory in search of a safer refuge. Political satire, journalism and non-fiction on what is going down in the world. All in comics form, the best medium. The New Jim Crow. The New Jim Crow is a stunning account of the rebirth of a caste-like system in the United States, one that has resulted in millions of African Americans locked behind bars and then relegated to a permanent second-class status—denied the very rights supposedly won in the Civil Rights Movement.

The New Jim Crow

Since its publication in 2010, the book has appeared on the New York Times bestseller list for more than a year; been dubbed the “secular bible of a new social movement” by numerous commentators, including Cornel West; and has led to consciousness-raising efforts in universities, churches, community centers, re-entry centers, and prisons nationwide. The New Jim Crow tells a truth our nation has been reluctant to face. As the United States celebrates its “triumph over race” with the election of Barack Obama, the majority of black men in major urban areas are under correctional control or saddled with criminal records for life.

Faced with the enormous social and economic upheavals at the nineteenth century’s end, learned Victorians like Walter Pater, John Ruskin, and Matthew Arnold looked to High Church models and played the bishops of Western culture, with a monkish devotion to preserving and transmitting old texts and traditions and turning back to simpler ways of life. It was in 1909, the nadir of this milieu, before the advent of modernism and world war, that The Harvard Classics took shape. Compiled by Harvard’s president Charles W. Eliot and called at first Dr. Science fiction and fantasy.

Every year, there are dozens of challenges to literary works as varied and acclaimed as The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, and Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Whether you’re a parent, a student, a teacher—or none of the above—you can fight back.

NCAC has been battling censors and book-banning advocates for over 40 years. Read the action kit below; click here for a full screen view.
