(SABC) The application for leave to appeal by the directors of Aurora Empowerment Systems is expected to be heard in the High Court in Pretoria on Thursday. Former Aurora directors, Khulubuse Zuma, Zondwa Mandela and Thulani Ngubani want to appeal against the court's ruling which held them liable for damages to the tune of R1.7 billion for the destruction of mining assets they gained control of. More than 5 000 employees were left jobless and without pay after the directors took over Pamodzi Gold after it went into liquidation. Aurora failed to raise sufficient funds to keep the mine running. In June, Judge Eberhard Bertelsmann held the directors liable for chaos at the mine, saying they were indisputably reckless. (SABC) Khulubuse Zuma claims allegations levelled against him by trade unions distort the findings a 2013 inquiry into the affairs of Pamodzi Gold. "Zuma wishes to record that he has noted statements attributed to the Cosatu Congress of SA Trade Unions and NUM National Union of Mineworkers leadership, castigating him for taking steps to protect his rights and blaming him for the plight of the mineworkers who were employed by Pamodzi," his spokesman Vuyo Mkhize said in a statement on Friday. (SABC) Trade Unions, Solidarity and Congress of South African Trade Union (Cosatu) members have picketed outside the North Gauteng High Court where President Jacob Zuma's nephew Khulubuse Zuma, former President Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Zondwa Mandela and other board directors involved in the Aurora Empowerment Systems in Stilfontein appeared. (SABC) Former Pamodzi East rand mine workers face the prospect of yet another black Christmas, if their lawsuit against Aurora Empowerment Systems is not finalised this year. Aurora, which acquired the mine, was liquidated over three years ago. It has been almost five years since these mine workers last received their salaries. The mine was liquidated after funding for operations was not secured. Liquidators have since filed this lawsuit to get Aurora directors to foot the bill.

“We took the matter to the labour court, [the] labour court made an award in 2009 for those workers to be paid R3,9 million. Labour federations have accused Aurora and its directors of delaying tactics, this is after they filed their affidavits late and asked for a postponement. The NUM says it is disappointed at the postponement of the court case while mine workers are starving and living without electricity.

(SABC) The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has expressed disappointment at the postponement of a court case involving directors of Aurora Empowerment Systems. The directors of Aurora indicated they were unprepared to start with the case. President Jacob Zuma's nephew Khulubuse Zuma and Nelson Mandela's grandson Zondwa Mandela are among the directors. NUM regional secretary Joseph Montsisetsi says workers are still waiting to be paid after the company was liquidated in 2011. Montsisetsi says: “We are very much disappointed, we thought (Tuesday) today justice would be done, but to wait another time until March next year. (REUTERS) Aurora mineworkers in the North West have been told that the goldmine's owners has ignored a court order to pay them R4.3 million, unions said. Nearly 700 miners gathered at the mine, which Aurora took over from liquidated Pamodzi Gold, where the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) told them the money they had been awarded by a High Court order had not be paid. Solly Nani Phetoe, Cosatu's provincial secretary, said the miners and their families were starving.
