Brain Atlas - Introduction

Weighing about 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms), the brain consists of three main structures: the cerebrum, the cerebellum and the brainstem. Cerebrum - divided into two hemispheres (left and right), each consists of four lobes (frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal). The outer layer of the brain is known as the cerebral cortex or the ‘grey matter’. It covers the nuclei deep within the cerebral hemisphere e.g. the basal ganglia; the structure called the thalamus, and the ‘white matter’, which consists mostly of myelinated axons. – closely packed neuron cell bodies form the grey matter of the brain.

Cerebellum – responsible for psychomotor function, the cerebellum co-ordinates sensory input from the inner ear and the muscles to provide accurate control of position and movement. Cognitive decline sets in as early as 45

A new study suggests that the cognitive functions of people as young as 45 may already be on the decline. In the study, Archana Singh-Manoux at University College London and her colleagues assessed the cognitive abilities of 7390 people at three points over a 10-year period. The participants were aged between 45 and 70 at the start of the study in 1997. At each of the three test points, Singh-Manoux's team assessed each participant on their verbal and mathematical reasoning, vocabulary and verbal memory and fluency. The team found that individuals from all age groups experienced a decline in cognitive function over the ten year period - even those aged between 45 and 49.

Perhaps less surprisingly, the group found that the older study participants experienced the greatest decline in cognitive function. Lights and Lasers Invade the Clinic. March 7, 2007 -- Omega-3 fatty acids -- found in foods including walnuts, flax, and fatty fish such as salmon and sardines -- may boost brain areas that govern mood. That's the finding from a preliminary study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh's Sarah Conklin, PhD. Folate And B12 May Influence Cognition In Seniors. Folate and vitamin B12, two important nutrients for the development of healthy nerves and blood cells, may work together to protect cognitive function among seniors, reports a new epidemiological study from the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University (USDA HNRCA).

Folate And B12 May Influence Cognition In Seniors

According to Martha Savaria Morris, PhD, epidemiologist at the USDA HNRCA, "we found a strong relationship between high folate status and good cognitive function among people 60 and older who also had adequate levels of vitamin B12. " The study, published in the January 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, also determined that low vitamin B12 status was associated with increased cognitive impairment. "People with normal vitamin B12 status performed better if their serum folate was high," explains Morris, corresponding author of the study.

"But for people with low vitamin B12 status, high serum folate was associated with poor performance on the cognitive test. " Forgetting May Be Part of the Process of Remembering. Lakeside Relaxation sound and music. Lakeside sounds are the sounds perceived by nature.
