How to sand and refurbish a wooden floor - floorboards

Using those large floor sanders will usually generate huge amouts of sawdust so most people do this work when a property is empty (i.e. before they move in) or include it in with other more major DIY jobs. Time : Before you rush out and hire a floor sander, remember that you may need time to prepare the floor by repairing/replacing badly broken floorboards and countersinking the nails and screws. Also remember that the floor sander makes a hell of a lot of noise, so its best operated during daylight hours or the neighbours might come knocking.

Sanding and Finishing - Sanding 101: Wood Floor Sanding Basics

By Kim M. Wahlgren December 2001/January 2002 Print Download PDF Plenty of installers have gotten into trouble trying to install a herringbone floor. Grey Herringbone Interior Herringbone, Chevron, ZigZag call it what you want. That fabulous signature pattern of Missoni Home (and even Charlie Browns shirt) is back in a big way. I have always been obsessed with herringbone wood floors for the extra dynamic and luxury touch it can give a room of any style. Herringbone has been used in fabric for ages as a classic mens suit and womens skirt fabric. Pair a grey herringbone with a rich tawny leather and you have a chic style that will fit right in to the Sunday racetrack crowd.

The Chevron design is a popular form of parquet which has the quality of making the room look spacious. Unlike the square blocks used in Herringbone parquet, chevron blocks are cut with 45 degree angles so that when they are laid together there are continuous lines running along the length of the room. The size of the blocks can alter the effect drastically. It is common in larger spaces to use large, wide blocks. This allows more area of natural grain pattern before a join. In smaller spaces narrower blocks can be used to make the room feel bigger.
