FEATURE-May 2011 by Bruce Irving | Photography Trent Bell | Styling Meagan Gilpatrick The Maine cottage comes of age Future archeologists may come to describe the evolution of the Maine cottage as a three-step process. In the beginning, they were humble, hand-built structures that provided basic shelter from the elements, a place to cook, and an outhouse, preferably away from the lake. What they lacked in, say, electricity, they made up for in beautiful materials (often sourced on-site) and the hard-to-define grace that our forebears brought to the shapes and proportions of everything they built—the pitch of a roof, the size of a dormer, the rough perfection of a stone chimney.

Next came the post–World War II “box” years, when a kind of get-’er-done ethos informed the function-over-form thinking of modernism, and tight budgets, practicality, and the American dream populated multi-lot developments with simple ranches. “The constraints were tremendous,” the homeowner recalls. Size 256 square feet %authorad4% Benefits: The concrete-piers design means it can be built on high-bank waterfront without disturbing the forest floor. Challenges: Erecting one is not a stealth manoeuvre: Building codes, permits, soil types all require consideration. Frills: Just look at it.

The verdict: Somewhat site-specific to Ontario, it’s the perfect solution to the “between a rock and a hard place” build. Entiat Vacation Rental - VRBO 407130 - 1 BR Lake Entiat Cabin in WA, Entiat Valley Recreation Cabin, Pvt. 1.5 Bd , Full Kit.$80/nt. So Peaceful So Peaceful Guest Shirley (Tacoma, WA) Date of stay 08/09/13 Review Submitted 08/14/13 We had a wonderful time at the cabin. It was so nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. No cell phones, no computer, ahhhh it doesn't get much better than that. I love the library and the fact that there is not television service. I was forced to read and explore and loved every minute of it. The Wenatchee Forest about 10 - 15 miles up the river is great to explore and I am excited to return soon. We watched the sky every night, Friday and Saturday lightening storm and Sunday/Monday meteor showers. It is centrally located so we could go to Chelan one day and Leavenworth the next.

Cabin Porn. Crosson, Clarke, Carnachan Architects | Projects - Hut On Sleds. The Hut on Sleds On the shore of an idyllic white sanded beach in New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula rests an elegant hut. Closed up, the rough macrocarpa-cladding blends into the landscape and perches quietly on the dunes, as passersby wonder how it could possibly function for a family of five. Designed to close up against the elements, the hut measures a mere 40 square metres and rests on two thick wooden sleds that allow it to be shifted around the beach front section.

This innovative portability is a response to the ever changing landscape that line the beachfront in this coastal erosion zone. Within the hut, the ingenuity reveals itself further as no nook or cranny is overlooked. Every available space has been utilised, right down to the secret individual cubby holes hidden in the children's bunk room. For these clients it was all about the real essence of the hut; small, simple and functional. McGuire Architectural Interiors - Mariwood Cabin, Wisconsin. This original log hunting cabin was built in the early 1920's on recently deforested land purchased at the end of the great timber harvests in the northern Midwest. Several outbuildings completed a compound that included a caretaker's cabin, tool and wood sheds, a garage, and a small shed for livestock. The original buildings were constructed with cedar logs, fir logs, and field stones from the property. Doors, windows, and milled lumber were sourced imaginatively from local salvage and scrap. Modified several times over the following sixty years, the cabin is used entirely for pleasure and has been one family's centerpiece for five generations. The effects of weather, animal infestation, old electrical wiring, and poor insulation threatened the cabin's future.

It was carefully lifted from its original stone footings and new foundations and sill logs were added. Inside, all new wiring, insulation and cedar paneling were installed. Photography by Matthew Allen. Image/33779384565.
