World’s Largest Tree House Measuring over 100 feet, this colossal tree house beats record after record. The general idea of a small place up in the tree is completely shattered when looking at these pictures. This house has ten stories and it took no less than 15 years to build. Its proud owner-Horace Burgess- says that a divine influence was at the bottom of this, as he is planning to create something that would “never run out of materials”. The place looks rustic and a bit weird, however it is an amazing structure that astonishes the beholder and makes one think nothing is impossible.
The Myth of the Disconnected Life - Jason Farman The new year is now well underway and many people have probably already broken the resolutions they made to disconnect from their digital devices more often and reconnect with the people and places immediately around them. In reflecting on the year that has passed, there were moments that became highly symbolic of the need to disconnect. For example, we began 2011 with a YouTube video that went viral on January 14: security footage of a woman falling into a fountain at a Philadelphia mall because she was walking while texting. The year ended with another plea to disconnect from our devices: the National Transportation Safety Board called for a ban on all cellphone usage while driving. A commercial that aired throughout 2011 for the Windows phone resonated with these concerns around when it is or isn't appropriate to use our phones. The call to disconnect was found in several best sellers of 2011 from Sherry Turkle's Alone Together to William Powers' Hamlet's Blackberry.
Crosson, Clarke, Carnachan Architects | Projects - Hut On Sleds The Hut on Sleds On the shore of an idyllic white sanded beach in New Zealand's Coromandel Peninsula rests an elegant hut. Closed up, the rough macrocarpa-cladding blends into the landscape and perches quietly on the dunes, as passersby wonder how it could possibly function for a family of five. Designed to close up against the elements, the hut measures a mere 40 square metres and rests on two thick wooden sleds that allow it to be shifted around the beach front section. This innovative portability is a response to the ever changing landscape that line the beachfront in this coastal erosion zone. Within the hut, the ingenuity reveals itself further as no nook or cranny is overlooked. For these clients it was all about the real essence of the hut; small, simple and functional. The mezzanine bedroom is accessed by climbing a wall-mounted ladder through a closeable hatch, it shares the same view as downstairs through the huge glass doors.
Courses June 2012, not far from Carmarthen: Henge of roundhouse being built in Bath, March 2012. The Shifty Singers sing in the Bath roundhouse at the end of week 3: Here is a video from that course showing the making of a reciprocal frame roof. Roundhouses The best way of building a roundhouse is in a group, and the best way to learn how to do it is in a group. There have been three courses in the first half of 2013. The second was the fire circle near Cardigan. Here we are - photo by Elena Mia Fortuny: There are no more courses definitely planned for 2013, but there is a small course for the Welsh language Urdd centre near the West Wales coast in October, and a grand project to make a roundhouse for a big bread oven, and the first work on a roundhouse in France in August/September 2014 so email me if you want to be sent info. Pictures and videos from courses We had a great time building the roundhouses of cobwood and strawbale at Plan-It Earth. Here is a little stop motion film of the building:
A New Privacy: Full Essay (Parts I, II, and III) Privacy is not dead, but it does need to change. Part I: Distributed Agency and the Myth of Autonomy Last spring at TtW2012, a panel titled “Logging off and Disconnection” considered how and why some people choose to restrict (or even terminate) their participation in digital social life—and in doing so raised the question, is it truly possible to log off? Taken together, the four talks by Jenny Davis (@Jup83), Jessica Roberts (@jessyrob), Laura Portwood-Stacer (@lportwoodstacer), and Jessica Vitak (@jvitak) suggested that, while most people express some degree of ambivalence about social media and other digital social technologies, the majority of digital social technology users find the burdens and anxieties of participating in digital social life to be vastly preferable to the burdens and anxieties that accompany not participating. We’re always connected, whether we’re connecting or not. You can opt-out, but you can’t make your friends opt-out. Are you my shadow profile?
Entiat Vacation Rental - VRBO 407130 - 1 BR Lake Entiat Cabin in WA, Entiat Valley Recreation Cabin, Pvt. 1.5 Bd , Full Kit.$80/nt So Peaceful So Peaceful Guest Shirley (Tacoma, WA) Date of stay 08/09/13 Review Submitted 08/14/13 We had a wonderful time at the cabin. It was so nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. No cell phones, no computer, ahhhh it doesn't get much better than that. I love the library and the fact that there is not television service. I was forced to read and explore and loved every minute of it. The Wenatchee Forest about 10 - 15 miles up the river is great to explore and I am excited to return soon.
Tree houses or houses in trees? I remember that when I was little I used to ask my grandpa again and again every summer to build a tree house for me and my sister. We really wanted one because we had the chance of playing into our friend’ s tree house and we thought it was so cool. But apparently so did other people and they never gave up the idea of living in a tree house and not temporarily, as part of a game, but permanently, making it their residence. This here is one of the largest tree houses in the world and it built its foundation on a big number of trees, also adding strong lateral support made of wood. Of course these houses are made entirely of wood , but they have all the equipment you need for a comfortable life inside, even if you are basically above earth.

Superadobe - What is Superadobe? Superadobe (sandbag and barbed wire) technology is a large, long adobe. It is a simple adobe, an instant and flexible line generator. It uses the materials of war for peaceful ends, integrating traditional earth architecture with contemporary global safety requirements. Long or short sandbags are filled with on-site earth and arranged in layers or long coils (compression) with strands of barbed wire placed between them to act as both mortar and reinforcement (tension). Stabilizers such as cement, lime, or asphalt emulsion may be added. This patented and trademarked (U.S. patent #5,934,027, #3,195,445) technology is offered free to the needy of the world, and licensed for commercial use. This concept was originally presented by architect Nader Khalili to NASA for building habitats on the moon and Mars, as “Velcro-adobe”. Cal-Earth believes that the whole family should be able to build together, men and women, from grandma to the youngest child. Safety Standards and Comfort.
