2013: The Young. The Wise. The Undiscovered. What is TED2013? TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in 1984, TED has grown to support world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. The best moments at TED have often come from unexpected places, and this year, we're pushing that to a new level. This past spring, we staged a global talent search to bring together the most remarkable lineup in TED's history. A series of TED salons in 14 cities around the world helped us discover a broad array of thinkers and doers, and a selection of them have been invited to California to share their work with the world, as part of an extraordinary roster of speakers and performers. Welcome to TED2013: The Young. More about TED conferences » 10 talks about the beauty — and difficulty — of being creative.

Radio host Julie Burstein has found the perfect analogy for creativity—raku pottery. A Japanese art form in which molded clay is heated for 15 minutes and then dropped in sawdust which bursts into flames, what makes this pottery so beautiful is its imperfections and cracks. Burstein interviewed hundred of artists, writers, musicians and filmmakers for her book, Spark: How Creativity Works, and heard many of them describe their process in similar terms — that the best parts of their work came from embracing challenges, misfortunes and the things they simply couldn’t control. As Burstein explains in this talk given at TED2012, “I realized that creativity grows out of everyday experiences more often than you would think.” In this talk, Burstein identifies four lessons that creative people should embrace: To hear how Burstein learned these lessons from filmmaker Mira Nair, writer Richard Ford, sculptor Richard Serra and photographer Joel Meyerowitz, listen to her wonderful talk.
