Dream plant: A recent design for a nuclear reactor known as a traveling wave reactor looks similar to some conventional nuclear designs, but the way it operates is very different. Terrapower, a startup funded in part by Nathan Myhrvold and Bill Gates, is moving closer to building a new type of nuclear reactor called a traveling wave reactor that runs on an abundant form of uranium. The company sees it as a possible alternative to fusion reactors, which are also valued for their potential to produce power from a nearly inexhaustible source of fuel. Work on Terrapower's reactor design began in 2006.

Paper-Powered Battery Sony I'll start you guys off with a quote here: In talking about Sony's new battery technology, which uses old cellulose product like newspapers and cardboard to generate electricity, the BBC says: "Their work builds on a previous project in which they used fruit juice to power a Walkman music player." Thank you, crazy Sony recycling-engineers. This new tech relies on turning cellulose products (including, lest we forget, the paper greeting cards all you Earth-hating monsters are exchanging this time of year) into glucose sugar. That's done by introducing the old paper products to a solution of water and cellulase, an enzyme found in nature, and, um, shaking it.

British actor John Cleese is best known for his comedic talent as one of the founding members of Monty Python , which makes his intellectual insights on the origin of creativity particularly fascinating. This talk from the 2009 Creativity World Forum in Germany is part critique of modernity’s hustle-and-bustle, part handbook for creating the right conditions for creativity. “We get our ideas from what I’m going to call for a moment our unconscious — the part of our mind that goes on working, for example, when we’re asleep.To ensure a sustainable and adequate water supply for normal use, for extraordinary use (such as fire-fighting, earthquakes), and to do these considering the lowest impact on the environment. To include alternative water, wastewater and storm water policies that promote the most environmentally and biologically sound methods in the City Water and Wastewater Master Plan. To create drinking water and wastewater standards that protect local and regional natural resources and public health, and are scientifically defensible while encouraging resource recovery. 1-1. 10% of the Citys wastewater is recycled for local use. 1-2. Dual plumbing is routinely installed for all new buildings over 40,000 sq. ft., and landscapes over 10,000 sq. ft., especially the ballpark, Hunters Point, China Basin and Treasure Island (in accordance with City Ordinance 391-92).

Based on a 25-hectare site in east London, the London Sustainable Industries Park -- as depicted in this CGI image -- hopes to lay the foundations for a cleaner and profitable future for businesses and residents of Dagenham. The design of the park also incorporates tree planting and swales which help mitigate local water and air pollution, as this architect's image shows. Closed Loop Recycling is the only tenant of the park currently, but at least two more are scheduled to arrive in 2012.
