UKs first 100Mbps symmetrical superfast broadband network goes live in Lincolnshire – property prices rocket | trefor.net. I have seen the light and it is in Ashby De La Launde. This revelation appeared to me this morning in a house surrounded by fields of potatoes, carrots and other parts of my 5 a day diet too numerous to mention. I am talking about the UK’s first true superfast broadband network. 100Mbps symmetrical in fact. Check this 30 second video out. The network has a 100Mbps feed which is then distributed around the village using 32kms of fibre that was put down in only 14 weeks – quicker in fact than it took BT to put in the 7 metre connection to hook it up with their own fibre network. All this talk of “how do we define superfast broadband?” Needs to just stop now. The definition is plain to see in Ashby.

Today was day two of the network rollout. I spoke with some of the first villagers to receive the service. There is a lot to be written about the story of how Ashby “saw the light” but for now we should content ourselves with soaking in the warm glow that comes with success. 039;Cold Hearted Town' by Rusty Shackle. “Civil servant drinks booze; gets bored sometimes; feels things; has a pulse; communicates” – yeah, that one. Nice work from Quentin Letts. For the prosecution: civil servant Sarah Baskerville says unforgivable things about drinking, having hangovers, government policy and the effect of cuts on public service workers. And rationally? She also does rather more, at her pay grade, than many. I wonder if there’s a further agenda lurking here that made Letts and the Mail feel it was acceptable to have a go at Baskers. I have news for Mr Letts. Sarah’s played things straight: her twitter account is presented as her own views, not those of her employer.

I believe that a world where people can be human, can express the bad as well as the good, can cry and rage and cheer with ease, and reach out to others to support (or to challenge) is a better one. In 2005, Jesse James Garrett at Adaptive Path published the seminal blog “Ajax: A New Approach to Web Applications” and ushered in new age of web architecture.

Ajax meant using the possibilities latent in JavaScript (specifically, the XMLHttpRequest object) so that a web page could contact the server asynchronously and request new data. This was revolutionary; within months, we were seeing pages that were more dynamic and interactive. Ajax short-circuited the submit/response loop that dominated web applications up to that time. Instead of making an HTTP request, receiving an entire web page, and rendering that page as a replacement for the current page, the browser requested a chunk of data. It used that chunk of data to interact with the DOM and rewrite the page it was displaying on the fly. Around the same time, the RESTful paradigm started taking hold. Important as Ajax and REST have been to the history of the web, each only represents half of a larger revolution. Related: Main Page - Opendataday. Big Society: Pragmatism, Collaboration and Cuts.

Big Society might be a radical political game-changer. We have looked at our political parties for many years now and wondered where we going to find the differentiators. The core has become about managing and decision making around complex national systems: financial, educational etc., There is still a belief that politics is about ideology, and there is not doubt at all that decisions have a hue that reflects deep-seated ‘world views’. But in our effort to create distinctions we polarise and oversimplify. The truth is that in the world today all governments have to be progressive in their thinking, strategies and implementation. The world has lost its appetite for extreme positions and views. What many people seem to want most from government is the practical delivery of the type of society they would like to live in and to be represented honestly and benignly. Why Big Society Thinking could be such a game changer politically is that it is: Solving practical problems in clever ways.

Assange's Lawyer: He's Upbeat, Surprised By Cyber-Attacks (EXCLUSIVE) "Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth. " - Oscar Wilde (a quote repeated by Julian Assange in the introduction to "Underground: Tales of Hacking, Madness and Obsession on the Electronic Frontier," a book he co-authored in 1997) Since he first landed in a London jail upon his arrest on Tuesday, the only thing that WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange has been requesting is access to a computer.

Of course -- what else would you expect the mastermind behind the online whistleblowing operation that has exposed the closely-guarded secrets of the world's most powerful countries to want? In a wide-ranging telephone interview with The Huffington Post on Friday, Assange's lawyer Mark Stephens described his jailhouse visit with his client, claimed that the U.S. Stephens, who isn't allowed to visit Assange again until Monday, the day before a court hearing in his case, says that he has not been contacted by the U.S. Though U.S. WikiLeaks App for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store. US Is Apparently Torturing Bradley Manning, Despite No Trial And No Conviction. While there's been a ton of attention paid to Julian Assange's arrest and situation, much less attention has been paid to Bradley Manning, the Army Private who has been accused of being the source of many of Wikileaks' more recent leaks concerning the US government and military.

It seemed like a reasonable question to ask, upon his arrest, whether or not he was simply whistleblowing or breaking the law. Certainly this is a question that is open for debate. What is pretty clear is that his intentions were absolutely to be a whistleblower. In his internet chat with Adrian Lamo (the guy who turned him in), Manning made it clear that if he was trying to cause problems for the US or had malicious intentions, he could have sold the info to foreign governments. I knew Manning had been arrested and was being held somewhere, but Glenn Greenwald is now covering how he is being tortured, despite the fact he has not been tried. And all this for a guy who has not even been convicted of anything.

FC Forum 2010. (For those who might read my blog for the first time – I never (ok, rarely) edit my blog posts and I write in affect. These are ramblings of my mind and might be contradictory but I’m trying to get a result using writing rather than getting a result with my writing). I have been spending all day at #fcforum in Barcelona. There has been lots of heated debates going on, but it was not until I got back to the hotel before I really understood how upset I am about something. Why is the world so obviously going to hell in a handbasket? Why can't anyone fix it? Here's my (admittedly whimsical) working hypothesis ... The rot set in back in the 19th century, when the US legal system began recognizing corporations as de facto people. Corporations do not share our priorities. Corporations have a mean life expectancy of around 30 years, but are potentially immortal; they live only in the present, having little regard for past or (thanks to short term accounting regulations) the deep future: and they generally exhibit a sociopathic lack of empathy.

Collectively, corporate groups lobby international trade treaty negotiations for operating conditions more conducive to pursuing their three goals. In short, we are living in the aftermath of an alien invasion. LegionOPS. Political Science Experts Are Frothing at the Mouth: The Korean Conflict Takes Center Stage | Seoul Gyopo Guide. The White House is currently engaged in a fresh move to promote open government around the globe. Morozov believes that WikiLeaks currently stands at a crossroads: one route ahead would see a radical global network systematically challenging those in power – governments and companies alike – just for the sake of undermining “the system". At the Virtual Goods Summit at London’s Chelsea Football Club this month, Peter Vesterbacka told the gathered cyber geeks to prepare for a surprise follow- up to “Angry Birds,” the Finnish megahit mobile-phone game.

With its arsenal of birds fired from slingshots at fortresses of pigs who’ve stolen their eggs, the game raced up the charts on Apple Inc.’s iPhone to become the bestselling app in 61 countries. The more than 10 million paid iPhone downloads at about $1 a pop have raked in profits for Espoo, Finland-based Rovio Mobile Oy, where Vesterbacka, dubbed the “Mighty Eagle,” is chief marketing officer. “No one has told the story from the pigs’ point of view,” Vesterbacka told the summit attendees.

Rovio is a star Finnish start-up in a country struggling to fill the gap left by the declining value of its best-known company, Nokia Oyj. “We won’t get another Nokia,” said Risto Siilasmaa, a Nokia board member who founded software company F-Secure Oyj as an engineering student in 1988. Twitter is in revolt after Paul Chambers yesterday lost his appeal against a conviction for sending a menacing electronic communication. Chambers sent the following tweet publicly over the social networking website: "Crap!

Robin Hood Airport is closed. You've got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I'm blowing the airport sky high! " This flippant and foolish comment has so far cost Chambers his job, a £1,000 fine and given him a criminal record, which he had hoped his appeal would remove. Judge Jacqueline Davies, however, upheld the judgement, calling Chambers an "unimpressive witness" and declaring that he "could not be unaware of the possible consequences.

" She also claimed that: "Any ordinary person reading this would see it in that way and be alarmed. Widespread travel chaos caused by some of the severest winter weather for a century left Christmas commuter plans in tatters and swathes of the country paralysed today. Delays and cancellations at a host of UK airports continued to hit thousands of passengers, while plummeting overnight temperatures left almost the entire road network caked in black ice.

After shutting yesterday, Heathrow said it would not be letting any flights land on its runway, with only a "handful" of departures taking place, pouring misery on hundreds of stranded people who were forced to spend the night in terminals. Just a handful of planes managed to leave Heathrow - while hundreds of flights were cancelled around the country, leaving Christmas travel plans in chaos. Edinburgh Airport closed this morning, before reopening for departing flights only. Hundreds of thousands of Britons had been due to fly this weekend, with four million expected to go abroad, according to travel association Abta.
