NASA Visible Earth: Home. Apollo mission rocket engines recovered. By Brian Walker, CNN A set of giant rocket engines that once propelled astronauts to space have now been recovered from the icy depths of the Atlantic, say a team of researchers led by Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos four decades after they splashed into the ocean. “What an incredible adventure,” Bezos posted on his website from onboard his recovery ship off the Florida coast. “We found so much,” the billionaire adventurer says. “We’ve seen an underwater wonderland – an incredible sculpture garden of twisted F-1 engines that tells the story of a fiery and violent end, one that serves testament to the Apollo program.”

Photos show workers pulling the rusty rocket parts the size of a small car from 14,000 feet down up to the deck of the boat. F-1 engines powered the Saturn V rocket carrying Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, along with other space shots. Bezos said in 2012 that he planned to recover those specific engines. The Detailed Universe: This will Blow Your Mind.

Star Size Comparison HD. StarChild: Glossary. Why isn't there an eclipse every full moon? A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth, sun and moon align in space, with Earth in the middle. At such times, Earth’s shadow falls on the full moon, causing a lunar eclipse. Total lunar eclipse for the Americas on night of April 14-15 A solar eclipse happens at the opposite phase of the moon – new moon – when the moon passes between the sun and Earth. Why aren’t there eclipses at every full and new moon? The moon takes about a month to orbit around the Earth. But the moon’s orbit is inclined to Earth’s orbit by about 5 degrees. The video below explains an eclipse when the new moon and full moon are aligned with the lunar nodes.

Relative to the moon’s phases, however, the nodes move about 30o westward (clockwise) each month. There might be some unfamiliar words in this video, including ecliptic and node. Even though the moon’s orbit is inclined to that of Earth – and even though there’s not an eclipse with every full and new moon – there are more eclipses than you might think.
