Batwoman’s Lesbian Marriage Problem. Another day, another comic book controversy that gets twisted around and misinterpreted to satisfy sensationalist news headlines. For those unaware, artist/writer JH Williams III made a somewhat public exit from DC Comics, where he was writing the ongoing Batwoman series (he had previously done the art on the series as well). In a blog post, Williams cited editorial interference as the motivating factor, and unfortunately, he is not the first creator since DC’s “New52” relaunch who has publicly departed from the company after airing similar grievances.

Williams mentions several storylines that he had been working on over the last two years that were allegedly cut short or changed at the last minute by the fickle editorial department, and among these points were a new origin story for Killer Croc and Batwoman’s marriage to her fiancé, Maggie Sawyer. (Okay, I admit that was a little bit sensationalist. But I got you interested, right?) Artist Spotlight: Sara Swaty. In Swaty's series 'In Between & Outside,' gender is represented as both a fluid, relaxed, and creative expression as well as a more tense and exploratory transition.

Above: Ben Photographer Sara Swaty writes, "The idea of gender and the roles, responsibilities, and expectations associated with it has fascinated me for years. Mainstream culture and society impact how we as a people view gender. Where we live and how we are raised dictates our own perceptions of gender, and what is ‘normal’ or ’weird,’ ‘right’ or ‘wrong.’ "In all of my photographic endeavors, I strive to create work that offers viewers new perspectives on social expectations and restraints within their cultural contexts. "I am always looking for subjects to participate. Sara Swaty is an energetic and passionate Los-Angeles based photographer who hails from St.

The Queen: Monarch of 11 countries where being gay can land you in prison. While the anti-gay laws in Russia have garnered a lot of International attention in recent weeks, it is still legal to be gay in the country. However, in other parts of the world, where The Queen is Head of State, gay people can still be jailed for same-sex activity. Queen Elizabeth II is Queen of three nation states where same-sex marriage is legal, England and Wales, Canada and New Zealand.

However in the majority of the countries where The Queen is the constitutional Monarch, there are no legal protections in place to protect LGBT people at all. The Queen is a constitutional monarch, so she is considered ‘above politics’ in all of her realms. In 11 of her 16 realms, homosexuality is illegal:- Antigua and Barbuda In Antigua and Barbuda same sex activity is illegal for both gay men and lesbian women.

Barbados Although the law is rarely enforced, people in Barbados found guilty of same-sex activity can face up to life imprisonment. Belize Grenada This list continues on the next page. The Sci-Fi Comic Book That Portrays Gay Romance as Completely Normal - Noah Berlatsky. Artifice is a well-written, cleverly plotted action-romance with two likable, appealing leads who both happen to be men. AMW Comics The sci-fi android romance comic Artifice is arresting—but not because it features gay protagonists. Rather, it's arresting because, reading it, you suddenly realize the extent to which gay protagonists are normal.

"Normal," in this context, means a couple of things. Most straightforwardly (if that's the right word here), writer Alex Woolfson and artist Winona Nelson are working in the yaoi comics genre. Yaoi—also referred to as boys' love or BL—is a Japanese comics (manga) genre written mostly by women, for women, which focuses on romance between gay men. Admittedly, Nelson's art is looks much more like mainstream Western comics illustration than like manga. The gay romance in Artifice is, though, also normal in the sense that it is normalizing. This parallel is almost over-obvious. But the analogy can be transferred to other sci-fi characters as well. Some of the Greatest, Most Popular Comic Books Are Feminist - Noah Berlatsky. Spawn creator Todd McFarlane recently claimed that comics with political messages don't make good comics.

But series like Wonder Woman and Sailor Moon prove him wrong. Mainstream superhero comics are aimed at guys. That's why Starfire, a character best known for her stint as an empowering icon for girls on Saturday morning cartoons, gets turned into a voracious, literally brain-damaged, libido-driven pin-up girl when she's translated to comics. It's why Wonder Woman, best known as an empowering icon for girls, gets turned into an excuse for buckets of bloodshed and gun play in her most recent comics incarnation. Data is hard to come by, but best guesses seem to estimate that the readership of superhero comics is between 90 and 95 percent male.

Last week, ThinkProgress's Alyssa Rosenberg confronted a bunch of mainstream comics creators about the lopsided nature of their industry. There are various problems with this statement. This shouldn't really be a surprise. Do Kids Care If Their Parents Adhere to Traditional Gender Roles? - Matt Villano. Probably not. They just want someone to be nurturing and someone to provide structure.

Tide It's not often that a work-at-home father finds himself in the crossfire of opinion writers. Yet, in between Taylor Swift dance parties with my daughters, that's where I've spent part of this month, the subject of two essays published in these very (virtual) pages. The stories referred to a piece I wrote for the New York Times Motherlode blog in November. The first, by Anne-Marie Slaughter, provided a measured and philosophical look at the value in giving men more control of household tasks.

Both of these essays provided interesting insight into the age-old-but-recently-in-the-news argument about the intersection of gender and parenthood. The more I reread these essays, the more I found myself asking open-ended questions. Most important, do they even care? I started my investigation on a hike with my girls. "Hey, so do you girls think there are any differences between Mommy and Daddy? " Pink Wasn't Always Girly - Anna Broadway. Toward the end of the 1925 novel The Great Gatsby, Jay shows up to lunch with his mistress and her husband in a pink suit. For modern readers, it's tempting to take his color selection as a sign of dandyism.

Why would a man choose to wear the color of Mary Kay, breast-cancer research tie-ins and kitchen gadgets galore? When cuckolded husband Tom Buchanan criticizes Gatsby for wearing pink, he seemingly echoes the present-day assumption that pink is a feminine color. But that would be imposing today's view of pink on the past. Buchanan uses the suit's hue not to discredit Gatsby's masculinity or virility, but his intellectual bona fides. He mentions it only when Gatsby's described as an Oxford man: "[Buchanan] was incredulous. 'Like hell he is!

Buchanan's comments make it clear that men in pink meant something different in the 1920s than today. Steele says pink was initially "considered slightly masculine as a diminutive of red," which was thought to be a "warlike" color. Don Draper Was Raped. Mad Men's non-consensual encounter between a young, frightened Dick Whitman and a prostitute didn't generate as much chatter as its gender-reversed scenario might have.

Why? In an episode of Mad Men last month, a prostitute named Aimee has sex with a teenaged Don Draper (née Dick Whitman) after nursing him through a nasty chest cold. Actually, let me rephrase: Aimee doesn't just have sex with young Dick Whitman--she rapes him. Throughout most of the episode, Aimee serves as a surrogate mother for Dick; she lets him recuperate in her bed and offers him rest, comforting words, spoonfuls of warm broth. However, in their penultimate scene together, Aimee's maternal kindness turns oddly predatory. She approaches her bed where Dick is lying weakly, fever newly broken, and asks, "Don't you want to know what all the fuss is about? To me, this interaction was an unambiguous depiction of rape--and not simply statutory rape. That didn't happen.

There is clearly a double standard at work here. From Pony To Person: The Disturbing Evolution Of My Little Pony, In Photos. Despite valiant efforts made by parents, toy creators and even kids themselves to convince brands to produce gender-neutral toys, the divide between "boy" and "girl" products remains vast. Blue stuff and action figures get relegated to boy land, pink stuff and dolls are in the girl aisle and, more often than not, the dolls are increasingly feminized. They are thin, have large eyes, long lashes and are dressed provocatively. As we've pointed out before, however, these characters (some iconic), weren't always so sassy. Once upon a time, Strawberry Shortcake was a round-faced little girl with freckles, long sleeves and bloomers. Trolls used to be, well, just trolls, not "Trollz," their sexy, slim, smooth-haired doppelgängers.

Perhaps the most shocking transformation is that of My Little Pony, a toy that was introduced in 1983 and has been revamped several times. The image on the left is an original My Little Pony from 1983, on the right, is 2013's Equestria Girl. Op-ed: F Bombs, C Terms, and Other Words With Friends. Words matter and keeping up with their changing nature is part of being alive, so study up on "cisgender" and stop dropping "queen" like you're Alec Baldwin. So I could hang out with my high school friends, the ones who knew Sicilian curses in their tweens, I chose Italian IV over Creative Writing. Two years later, I dropped linguistics in college; just like astronomy, I hoped it would be interesting but I found it really dry and tedious. Since I make my living speaking ideas and communicating them via writing, my choice of courses is pretty funny (I eventually got it together and majored in journalism).

It’s especially amusing considering how much I love words and take pleasure in seeing their usage morph, grow, or atrophy; some words or phrases die from overuse like a heart exposed to too much cocaine (“Aight," "Beyotch," "As If," "Whatever”) while some are classic like a good pair of jeans (“S/He’s a mess! "). When I was a teen, the F word was everywhere. Coming Out With Some Help From 'The Simpsons' The popular animated show's positive depictions of gay people have helped many come out, a German academic says.

If you’re an out and proud gay man, you may just owe some thanks to America’s favorite yellow-hued, blue-collar family. A scholarly study coming out as in a book in Germany finds evidence that The Simpsons “has helped to enable gay men to come out, because of they way it sympathetically portrays homosexuality,” reports the U.K.’s Pink News. For Behind the Gay Jokes: Homosexuality in ‘The Simpsons,’ to be published next week in Germany, Cologne-based academic librarian Erwin In het Panhuis studied 500 gay-themed scenes and 70 LGBT characters from the long-running animated series.

He writes that the show “treats homosexuality as something normal in a media environment which can usually be very hostile to the point of view.” He discusses Homer Simpson’s many same-sex kisses, the relationship between tycoon C. Gaysayer Opinions: I Am Not a Homophobe. Gay comedian, Mike Gillerman, is tired of being scrutinized for not looking the part.

Mike Gillerman My name is Mike Gillerman and I’m not a homophobe. There, I said it. It's baffling to have to say that considering I’m a comedian who talks extensively about being gay on stage. Why would anyone think I’m afraid of other homosexuals? Yet the sentence “I’m not a homophobe” has passed through my lips so often, at this point it should be tattooed on the side of a penis. The irony is every time I've had to say it, I was defending myself from another gay person. At some point back in the early 1980s, the elder council of homosexuals all got together to watch episodes of Dynasty and vote on what they classify as gay. The problem is, some gays didn’t get the memo. “I don’t think you’re actually gay. Those are actual words uttered to me by the bartender of a very popular gay bar in the West Village right before I went up the other night.

The era of the gay stereotype is over. Study: The Simpsons has helped gay men to come out due to portrayal of homosexuality. A study has found that cartoon series the Simpsons, has helped to enable gay men to come out, because of they way it sympathetically portrays homosexuality. Erwin In het Panhuis, a German academic, conducted the study, which found that the popularity of characters, such as Homer Simpson, and the way the series as a whole deals with homosexuality during prime time, has been “trailblazing”, for helping positive attitudes towards same-sex couples. The librarian, based in Cologne, conducted the study over several years, analysing almost 500 scenes from the cartoon series, which he says help to dispel anti-gay discrimination.

The study was published as a book titled Behind the Gay Jokes- Homosexuality in ‘The Simpsons’, he writes that the programme “treats homosexuality as something normal in a media environment which can usually be very hostile to the point of view.” The author also suggests that Homer Simpson, the main family’s father, is a more complex character than he immediately appears.

It’s Juneteenth 2013. More Black people are in prison than were slaves and Paula Deen wants to bring slavery back. Today is June 19, or Juneteenth. While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863, slaves in Texas didn’t find out slavery was over until June 19, 1865, hence commemorating this date as the end of legal slavery in the US. As Phillipe Copeland points out, the prison system was quickly positioned to take the place of slavery through the 13th amendment: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” (emphasis mine)If the architects of the 13th Amendment really wanted to abolish slavery, why make an exception for criminal convictions? This has led to a disturbingly racist reality. I wonder what those newly emancipated Africans in 1865 Texas would think if they could travel through time to 2013?

The prison system is one major way in which the racism of US slavery lives on today. Santorum. Savage Lovecast. Savage Love by Dan Savage - Seattle Columns - Savage Love - Dan Savage. June 5, 2013 By Dan Savage I love my husband of 20 years, but sexual differences are putting a strain on our marriage. Ten years ago, he asked me to talk dirty to him about having sex with other men. It has progressed to him wanting to be a cuckold. I only want to be with him, but he presses the issue by verbalizing cuckold situations during sex. Extremely Frustrated Female Experiencing Despair Your husband was probably reading cuckolding blogs for years before he worked up the nerve to raise the subject, EFFED, and here's what he's gleaned from them: husband brings it up, wife shoots it down, husband whines, wife agrees to explore it as fantasy only, and then one day—after years of dirty talk—wife announces she wants to give it a try. Reading so many cuckolding success stories—many likely fictitious—has left your husband convinced that if he just keeps at it, one day his wife will want to try it.
