San Rocco.

Alilaguna. Guggenheim. PEGGY Guggenheim was born in New York on 26 August 1898, the daughter of Benjamin Guggenheim and Florette Seligman.

Guggenheim

Benjamin Guggenheim was one of seven brothers who, with their father, Meyer (of Swiss origin), created a family fortune in the late 19th century from the mining and smelting of metals, especially silver, copper and lead. The Seligmans were a leading banking family. Peggy grew up in New York. In April 1912 her father died heroically on the SS Titanic. In 1921 Peggy traveled to Europe. In 1939 Peggy conceived “the idea of opening a modern museum in London,” with her friend Herbert Read as its director. In October 1942 Peggy opened her museum/gallery Art of This Century.

Pollock and the other artists were among the pioneers of American Abstract Expressionism. In 1947 Peggy decided to return in Europe, where her collection was shown for the first time at the 1948 Venice Biennale, in the Greek pavilion. Venice - The Gondola. The gondola is the only boat in the world which, being just 11 metres long and weighing more than 600 kilograms, can be steered with agility and easyness by just one person and with only one oar and it has become, for millions of tourists, the very symbol of Venice.

Venice - The Gondola

It is unique, just like the town that it represents, Venice in Italy, also for its constructive characteristiques. First of all it the gondola is asymmetrical, as its left side is larger than the right one for 24 cm and so it always sails tilted on one side. The keel, thus, is not straight but it bends to the right, so that the gondola floats particularly tilted on the right-hand side. That allows the counterbalancing of the push of the only oar which would tend to carry it to the left side. Tickets St Marks Basilica Venice Italy.
