Vooruit. Os. Backup. Web 2.0 in African Civil Society - Kabissa Wiki. Rationale Kabissa recognizes that Wikis are powerful online collaboration tools. We have had an “intranet” wiki as a team/project management tool for over a year, and it has been a very useful addition to our other typical office tools (shared file server, e-mail, etc). With it, a team of people spread across the globe is able to work closely together, and new people can quickly get up to speed with Kabissa's organizational logistics, policies and procedures.

This last is very important because we have several intern positions that are regularly being filled by new people. But as exemplified by the Wikipedia Online Encylopedia1), the revolutionary value of wikis is in using them for collaboratively working on text-based resources. Background to the program In 2003, Kabissa launched the Time to Get Online program, which combines self-learning materials with hands-on workshops to empower African organizations to fully integrate the Internet into their work. Why a wiki? Wiki Challenges. Web 1.0 vs. Web 2.0. Ok, smart people. I need your help. I'm gathering all my samples and bookmarks for a brown bag lunch chat re: what makes a Web site 2.0? First, in deference, I must say, I do get the 'real' definition.

At least as far as you can 'get' a highly contested definition of a very smooshy topic. But, still, I want to take to farther. Take a look. Real People Don't Have Time for Social Media - ReadWriteWeb. Let's be honest here: we're all a bunch of social media addicts. We're junkies. Whether it's a new Twitter app, a new Facebook feature, or a new social anything service, we're all over it. But we may not be the norm. The truth is, being involved in social media takes time, something that most people don't have a lot of. So how can regular folk get involved with social media? The Time It Takes To Be Involved It was this post on a blog called Museum 2.0 that caught our eye. [Side Note: Museum 2.0 is a blog whose niche is exploring the technologies and philosophies of web 2.0 and then applying them to museums, yes, like brick-and-mortar museums. The post was "How Much Time Does Web 2.0 Take? " The point of the scale is to show regular folk, albeit those in a particular industry, how they can fit getting involved with social media into their day-to-day routine.

Let's call it a "real person" scale. 1-5 Hours per Week = Participant A participant is at the lower end of the scale. Web 2.0. Social software: Closing Thoughts on Social Software Affordances. WhoOwnsWhat.jpg (JPEG-afbeelding, 1210x960 pixels) Tangler. Web 2.0. November 2005 Does "Web 2.0" mean anything? Till recently I thought it didn't, but the truth turns out to be more complicated. Originally, yes, it was meaningless. Now it seems to have acquired a meaning. And yet those who dislike the term are probably right, because if it means what I think it does, we don't need it. I first heard the phrase "Web 2.0" in the name of the Web 2.0 conference in 2004.

So I was surprised at a conference this summer when Tim O'Reilly led a session intended to figure out a definition of "Web 2.0. " Origins Tim says the phrase "Web 2.0" first arose in "a brainstorming session between O'Reilly and Medialive International. " I don't think there was any deliberate plan to suggest there was a new version of the web. And they were right. The story about "Web 2.0" meaning the web as a platform didn't live much past the first conference. And yet, oddly enough, Ryan Singel's article about the conference in Wired News spoke of "throngs of geeks. " Well, no. 1. 2. 3. Notes. Collaborative Thinking: Social Software: "Made By BEA" At the O'Reilly eTech conference (March 27), BEA introduced a collection of social computing products under the "Web 2.0" banner. BEA also revealed a new web site, en.terpri.se and a supporting blog. The product is expected to become available in mid-2007.

The products relevant to my coverage are AquaLogic Pathways and AquaLogic Pages (see summary below). First Impression: From what I've seen so far, BEA appears to have done its homework to design these products with an enterprise environment in mind (e.g., security, integration). Concerns: BEA is not considered a major collaboration vendor. Market: This move puts BEA in direct competition with other large platform vendors such as IBM (Lotus Connections), Microsoft (SharePoint Products & Technologies which supports user profiles, blogs, wikis and social search, Knowledge Network which provides deeper support for expertise and social networking) and Oracle (WebCenter).

By Ellyssa Kroski Phase Two of the World Wide Web has begun and with it comes a renaissance of participation and regeneration.

What is Web 2.0 all about? Proponents of the concept claim that it is the second generation of the Internet. This exciting evolution sees the user as the center of the virtual universe. It is an inclusive universe, taking into account the needs of all users, not just those which make up the mainstream. The Web 2.0 mindset is about using the wisdom of crowds to develop better software, designing simple and straightforward applications efficiently in response to user inclination, and sharing that technology so that others can build upon it.

There has been a fundamental shift in the paradigm of how we think about and use the Web. But what some consider a rally cry; others deem a lot of “bunk”. The Hype The term has since developed a robust definition with O’Reilly and others elucidating its finer points. The Web is a Platform. The Network Effect. Less is More. Les Blogs 2.0 Video Archive. Rather it's father-of-the-web Tim Berners-Lee's label for his latest attempt to express the power of the Semantic Web's core technologies in ways that will resonate beyond the established SemWeb literati.
