To me, one of the most unused properties of a computer is the desktop display. There’s nothing much to do with it. Sometimes I change the wallpaper with a new one and sometimes I go a little bit further by setting a series of pictures to alternate every few minutes.

Protovis
Protovis composes custom views of data with simple marks such as bars and dots. Unlike low-level graphics libraries that quickly become tedious for visualization, Protovis defines marks through dynamic properties that encode data, allowing inheritance, scales and layouts to simplify construction. Protovis is free and open-source, provided under the BSD License.
Web 2.0
Web 2.0, a phrase coined by O'Reilly Media in 2004, refers to a supposed second-generation of Internet-based services — such as social networking sites, wikis, communication tools, and folksonomies — that let people collaborate and share information online in previously unavailable ways. O'Reilly Media, in collaboration with MediaLive International, used the phrase as a title for a series of conferences and since then it has become a popular (though ill-defined and often criticized) buzzword amongst certain technical and marketing communities. Alluding to the version-numbers that commonly designate software upgrades, the phrase "Web 2.0" hints at an improved form of the World Wide Web, and some people have used the term for several years. Tact Filters
I came up with this idea several years ago in a conversation with a friend at MIT, who was regularly finding herself upset by other people who worked in her lab. The analogy worked so well in helping her to understand her co-workers that I decided to write it up and put it on the web. I've gotten quite a few email messages since then from other people who have also found it helpful. All people have a "tact filter", which applies tact in one direction to everything that passes through it.

Both ideas are complimentary, giving rise to new opportunities in communication, activism and business. Also, web 2.0 could be understood as a meme designed for the marketing of a new generation of Internet businesses, born as an evolution of the bubble occurring at the end of the last century. But what is web 2.0?, do we actually need a definition?, or, at least, some conceptual map to navigate the new scenario?.
