Meteor Activity Outlook for March 15-21, 2014. Radiant Positions at 9pm Local Daylight Time Radiant Positions at 1am Local Daylight Time Radiant Positions at 5am Local Daylight Time During this period the moon reaches its full phase on Sunday March 16th. At this time the moon will lie opposite the sun and will be above the horizon all night long.

As the week progresses the moon will not rise until the late evening hours, allowing a little time to view under dark conditions. Unfortunately this is the slowest time of night to try and view meteor activity. The estimated total hourly meteor rates for evening observers this week is near 2 for observers situated at mid-northern latitudes and 3 for observers viewing from the southern tropics (latitude 25 S.). The radiant (the area of the sky where meteors appear to shoot from) positions and rates listed below are exact for Saturday night/Sunday morning March 15/16. The table below presents a list of radiants that are expected to be active this week.

Highlights of the Month April - Mars at Opposition. Image NASA. Mars, lying above Spica in Virgo, reaches opposition on April 8th when its magnitude will be -1.5 and its angular diameter 15.1 arc seconds. Due to the fact that Mars, and to a lesser extend, the Earth have elliptical orbits, its distance from us at opposition can vary from ~54 to 102 million km.

As a result the angular size will vary from ~13 to 25 arc seconds - a major difference. The angular size at opposition is now increasing to reach 18.6 arc seconds in May 2016 and 24.31 arc seconds in July 2018. April - it is still worthwhile to view Jupiter. Jupiter imaged by Damian Peach Jupiter is now well past opposition but this is a still a good month to observe this giant of planets. The features seen in the Jovian atmosphere have been changing quite significantly over the last few years - for a while the South Equatorial Belt vanished completely (as seen in Damian's image) but has now returned to its normal wide state.
