Reflecting on the Cholera Outbreak in Haiti, Three Years Later

Charles Patrick Almazor, from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is director of clinical services for Zanmi Lasante, Partners In Health's sister organization in Haiti. He has worked for PIH and ZL since 2001, and was one of the doctors who saw the first cholera patients in St. Marc. He wrote the following reflection about the disease, which had never been reported in Haiti before the Oct. 19, 2010, outbreak three years ago. Haiti is known for its torrential rains. He was a familiar figure here, the lanky scion of a prominent family who suffered from a mental illness. On Oct. 16, 2010, Pelette, 38, woke at dawn in his solitary room behind a bric-a-brac shop off the town square. As was his habit, he loped down the hill to the Latem River for his bath, passing the beauty shop, the pharmacy and the funeral home where his body would soon be prepared for burial. The river would have been busy that morning, with bathers, laundresses and schoolchildren brushing their teeth. Cholera outbreak creeps closer to Haiti's capital. (AP) -- A spreading cholera outbreak in rural Haiti threatened to outpace aid groups as they stepped up efforts Saturday hoping to keep the disease from reaching the squalid camps of earthquake survivors in Port-au-Prince.

Cholera outbreak creeps closer to Haiti's capital

Health officials said at least 208 people had died and 2,674 others were infected in an outbreak mostly centered in the Artibonite region north of the capital. But the number of cases in towns near Port-au-Prince were rising, and officials worried the next target will be hundreds of thousands of Haitians left homeless by January's devastating quake and now living in camps across the capital. Hurricane Tomas lashes already devastated Haiti

Port-Au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) -- Already devastated this year by a killer earthquake and a deadly cholera outbreak, Haiti felt the brute force Friday of Hurricane Tomas, which could dump up to 15 inches of rain and trigger flash floods and mudslides. The hurricane's punishing rain continued to pound Haiti even as the storm churned away from Hispaniola. As of 8 p.m. Quake-ravaged Haiti braces for tropical storm Tomas. It's a scenario in earthquake-stricken Haiti that aid groups have been preparing for, but no one wanted to see: a tropical cyclone bearing down on a nation where flimsy postquake tents house more than a million people and buildings that once might have served as shelters for some residents are now piles of rubble.

Quake-ravaged Haiti braces for tropical storm Tomas

Aid groups and the Haitian government are trying as best they can to help people gird for tropical storm Tomas. It is expected to reach hurricane strength before making landfall overnight Friday somewhere west of Port-au-Prince, along the country's southern peninsula. Since aid began flowing into the country after a major earthquake Jan. 12, which killed an estimated 300,000 people, aid workers have steered some of that material toward hurricane preparedness. Residents have been building retaining walls out of sandbags to forestall mudslides and flooding.

Aid workers have stockpiled tents, water purification equipment, and other emergency supplies around the country. UN iterates blood tests negative.

NEW YORK, OCT 29 - The United Nations headquarters has insisted that tests of samples taken from Nepali peacekeepers based in Haiti have proved ‘negative’. The UN’s clarification comes amidst allegations that sewage water coming from latrines at the Nepali peacekeeping base in Mirebalais could be the source of cholera outbreak in the Caribbean country. The UN has reiterated its point amid international concern over the cholera outbreak. During the daily noon briefing at the UN headquarters on Thursday, Spokesperson for the Secretary General, Martin Nesirky, said, “Tests of samples from the military camp and waters adjacent to the river were conducted on October 22 and proved negative.” Denying claims that there were leakages in the sewage system, Nesirky told reporters that the overflow of water seen near the latrines is actually from the kitchen and showers of the Nepali camp. The UN has also denied allegations that Nepali peacekeepers are suffering from cholera. Haiti Cholera Counter.
