ZBrush tutorial: Monster-size sculpting tips from the BBC's Planet Dinosaur | ZBrush. Creating dinosaurs for a TV series can be a tricky process. In my experience, deadlines are tight and most of the time you only have one shot at getting the creatures right. But with some basic planning and forethought, you can focus on creating the creatures - knowing that they will fulfil all the necessary requirements - and facilitating any changes that may be required. Monsterous 3D modelling At Jellyfish Pictures, while working on Planet Dinosaur, it was decided that the theropods (I sculpted 27 of them) should have scaly skin, which can be time-consuming.

So I planned a quick and simple character pipeline that would ensure consistent style across all the characters and enable artists to follow the same style. This is an overview of the settings, brushes and steps we used to create the dinosaurs. ZBrush has been designed with creativity at its heart. Workflow & breakdown for THE RAT using Vrayfur & VrayMtlHair3 « Visual FX | Animation | 3D – VFXForge.com. Download PDF Version Here is a breakdown of the workflow used in making the Rat including tips on using Vrayfur for Maya. - Model the polygon mesh, my rat will be used in mid to long stills, so I kept the topo light. - Detailed and textured the model in Zbrush , exported normal and diffuse map at 4K ( max subdiv was about 1.4mil ) - I did several different diffuse texture maps, one with fur already applied and one with just the skin. - Did a rough hair pass with zbrush’s fibermesh, original idea was to export the curves into maya hairsystem.

I found this technique was really suitable for styled long hair, fur wise it was much easier using the vrayfur method described below. ( will post workflow for this as well later ) - So after mucking around with hairsystems I decided to switch tac and looked into vrayfur and VrayMtlHair3 . The main concepts to grasp of using Vrayfur and VrayMtlHair3 are VrayMtlHair3 is just a hair shader, you can apply this to any hair system or geometry. Workflow Liscence. Hair in Maya - Workflow? Here's how to do the hair: 1. duplicate the head object, delete all the faces except for the scalp area. 2. create and shape hair using CV curves., make sure you have enough of them, and they are all evenly spaced out. (do 1 half and then mirror them to the other side). Try to keep the base of the curves close to the scalp object. 3. when you're happy with the placement, select all the curves and turn them into dynamic curves. ( Hair >> Make curves dynamic ) in the option box make sure Snap base to surface is on ) 4. select all your dynamic curves ( the fastest way would be to play the simulation, select 1 moving hair and hit the UP arrow key once ) 5. go to your first frame, go to Hair >> Set start position to current. 6. create a dumb object ( a sphere ) select a face from it and go to Hair >> create hair option box. 7. in the option box make sure "At selected points/faces" is on, Also make sure its set to "painteffects and nurbs curves" Hit create. that should do it. lol,
