Singularity Summit | Summit 2010 > Overview - (Build 20100722150226)
The first Singularity Summit was held at Stanford in 2006 to further understanding and discussion about the Singularity concept and the future of human technological progress. It was founded as a venue for leading thinkers to explore the subject, whether scientist, enthusiast, or skeptic. The goal of the Summit is to improve people’s thinking about the future and increasing public awareness of radical technologies under development today and of the transformative implications of such technologies understood as part of a larger process.

Technological singularity refers to the hypothetical future emergence of greater-than-human intelligence through technological means, very likely resulting in explosive superintelligence. [ 1 ] Since the capabilities of such intelligence would be difficult for an unaided human mind to comprehend, the occurrence of a technological singularity is seen as an intellectual event horizon , beyond which the future becomes difficult to understand or predict. Proponents of the singularity typically state an "intelligence explosion" [ 2 ] [ 3 ] is a key factor of the Singularity where superintelligences design successive generations of increasingly powerful minds. The term was coined by science fiction writer Vernor Vinge , who argues that artificial intelligence, human biological enhancement or brain-computer interfaces could be possible causes of the singularity.

The Singularity Summit is the world's leading dialog on the Singularity, bringing together scientists, technologists, skeptics, and enthusiasts alike. It was created to provide a much needed forum to discuss the risks and opportunities presented by our expanding relationship with technology. While some regard the Singularity as a positive event and work to hasten its arrival, others view the Singularity as dangerous, undesirable, or unlikely. The most practical means for initiating the Singularity are debated, as are how, or whether, it can be influenced or avoided if dangerous. What, then, is the Singularity?
