Your Brain On Psilocybin Might Be Less Depressed : Shots - Health Blog

Baxterclaus/Flickr This could be your forest on psilocybin. Magic mushrooms are said to blow your mind, but the hallucinogenic chemical psilocybin, the active ingredient, actually reins in key parts of the brain, according to two new studies. The memorably vivid emotional experiences reported by mushroom users may flourish because the parts of the brain suppressed by psilocybin usually keep our world view tidy and rational. And since the brain area affected by psilocybin can also be out of whack in mental health problems such as depression, the researchers speculate that the drug may turn out to be useful in treating mental illness. "The brain's doing a lot to keep our experiences of the world orderly and constrained," says Robin Carhart-Harris, a post-doc in neuroscience at Imperial College London, and lead author of the studies. The studies are among the first to use brain imaging to take a peek at the brain on psilocybin. Reader (44)

List of misconceptions about illegal drugs. LSD[edit] Some of the strangest urban legends told are those about lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), a potent psychedelic drug that gained popularity in several countries in the 1960s and 1970s, and experienced a brief resurgence in the mid to late 1990s before declining from 2000 onward.

The drug's relation to the 1960s counterculture was likely part of the reason for such legends. Attempted murder[edit] "Anyone caught selling LSD can be charged with attempted murder. " This is a common urban legend that the psychotropic effect of LSD is such an extreme danger to human life that the seller could face charges of attempted murder or manslaughter. Babysitter places baby in the oven while high on LSD[edit] This is an unverifiable drug-scare story dating to the 60s of a hippie babysitter girl putting a baby in the oven and a turkey in the bassinet. Bad LSD[edit] A "bad trip" is easily caused by an expectation or fear of ill effects, which may later be blamed on "bad acid. " "Bananadine" LSD[edit] ‘Magic Mushrooms’ Cause Positive Personality Change. New research from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine indicates that the psychedelic component in magic mushrooms may have lasting medical and spiritual benefits to psychological health.

‘Magic Mushrooms’ Cause Positive Personality Change

The mushroom-derived hallucinogen, called psilocybin, is known to cause transformative spiritual states, but at high doses it can also bring about “bad trips” marked by terror and panic. The trick is to get the dose just right, which the Johns Hopkins researchers report having accomplished. In their study, the Hopkins scientists were able to reliably induce transcendental experiences in volunteers, which offered long-lasting psychological growth and helped people find peace in their lives — without the negative effects. “The important point here is that we found the sweet spot where we can optimize the positive persistent effects and avoid some of the fear and anxiety that can occur and can be quite disruptive,” says lead author Roland Griffiths, professor of behavioral biology at Hopkins.
