That is a little unsightly, but more importantly if you needed to re-stretch onto a new or higher grade stretcher for a collector you would almost certainly have to use a smaller stretcher and lose part of the original painting. Also introduces a tear risk at the corner, as the exposed seam can catch on things or easily wear through (as it almost has on one of mine). 2) Canvas has only two coats of gesso. 3) Splining makes for a clean look on the back, but can't be tightened easily; you would need to pull canvas from spline and re-staple.

I think this is much cooler than, for example, a painting, which basically has this big implicit sign hanging off of it that says, "I am just a painting of an object, not the object itself.
