Future Vision - From the mind of Robert Rice

The concept of Augmented Reality has been around for a very long time , and not just in fiction. I’m not going to spend much time talking about what augmented reality (“AR)” is or should be, you can do that on your own. There are plenty of resources like Ori Inbar’s Games Alfresco out there that will get you up to speed quickly. Start there if you want to know who is who, and who is doing what. I’m not aware of any other resource on the net that is as definitive as this site is. The Present

http://www.curiousraven.com/home/2009/12/23/2010-year-one-decade-of-ubiquity.html I’ve blogged in the past about Future Vision and the coming Decade of Ubiquity and my predictions for what might occur between now and 2012 , which is a bit beyond the current crop of 2010 predictions by some really smart people as aggregated by Games Alfresco . I’ve always had a knack for thinking ahead, and more often than not, I’ve been too early. I started a company in 1995 to build the first real-time 3D MMORPG (during the days of VGA and 2D sprite “3D” graphics) with a strong emphasis on social gameplay, and in 1999 I was evangelizing the digital nation as a virtual world community platform, and in 2000 I shifted to 3D interfaces to the Internet along with virtual goods and microtransactions, and I made a scathing indictment of online worlds and MMORPGs back in 2006 about the decline of that industry’s craft and lore which many people are finally beginning to see and agree with.

10 Cool Things Going On Right Now in Augmented Reality « Games A

http://gamesalfresco.com/2010/05/03/10-cool-things-going-on-right-now-in-augmented-reality/ Augmented reality has come a long way in a years time. Last year I got excited by research projects and gimmicky AR webcam advertising, but that quickly faded on the tenth plus iteration. It wasn’t until July that we starting having real AR products in the form of apps.

http://gamesalfresco.com/2010/04/06/what-is-tagwhat-a-look-behind-the-scenes-with-dave-elchoness/ We were among the first developers in the world on the Layar browser. As GoWeb3D, we developed a number of the more popular layers including Wikipedia, FlickAR, Eat, Drink, Mazda, and UDR Real Estate. In the second half of 2009, we decided to create our own proprietary AR platform. It was then that we renamed ourselves Iryss to better reflect our new business focus. In November, we demonstrated the integration of Iryss’ AR platform with active RFID (RTLS) data. Once we saw how we could deliver that data to the enterprise in AR via a very inexpensive consumer mobile device, we knew we have something exciting on our hands.

What is Tagwhat? A Look Behind the Scenes with Dave Elchoness «

“Researchers at McGill University in Montreal, Canada have developed floor tiles that can simulate the look, sound and feel of snow, grass or pebbles underfoot. Such a tool could perhaps be used for augmented reality applications, tele-presence, training, rehabilitation or even as virtual foot controllers. “The modular “haptic” floor tiling system is made up of a deformable plate suspended on a platform. Between the plate and platform are sensors that detect forces from the user’s foot.
