As I start a new semester with a new group of students looking at some aspects of information literacy, I have to sit back and ask myself the question I’ve been pondering over for the past 20 years or so.

What exactly is information literacy? Of course it’s not a simple question, like ‘What is the capital of Scotland?’. Gee's Strategies & Information Literacy: Production. This concept falls in line with Gee’s Insider Principle, where “the learner is and insider, teacher, and producer (not just a `consumer`)” but goes beyond that.

Gee's Strategies & Information Literacy: Production

It is not simply being able to produce an end product, but to reshape and build the world itself. The example on the sides is of the upcoming PS3 game “Little Big Planet” where the player is given the tools to create a world or stage of their own design, populating it with whatever environments, obstacles, and physics they desire. The game provides an open canvas for the player to create, experiment, and adjust the game to individual taste. These worlds can be saved and shared with other players, creating a unique game experiences from every creation. Creating game content is nothing new, Real-time-strategy and First-person shooters have used map editors and modders have created whole new game experiences based on the original game’s engine, which create more investment and motivation from the player. 08.pdf (Objet application/pdf) Alfabetización Informacional en Argentina (ALFIN) LILAC (Librarians' Information Literacy Annual Conference) (Dolores' List of CFPs)

To be fair, I thought I should diagram the other three parts of the AASL Standards: Dispositions in Action; Responsibilities; and Self-Assessment Strategies. These sections are both the most visionary and the most problematic of the new standards. A quick glance at the diagram above shows that these three sections deal with HOTs, ethics, and especially attitudes toward learning. I guess we will find out. ... the Learning Assessment and Indicators piece, the Implementation project (that task force is chaired by Susan Ballard) and, coordinated with the standards, Program Guidelines (that task force is chaired by Bonnie Grimble). The AASL standards are an overview of best practices. So, everyone confused at a higher level? Libraries - Expert Discussion - Goethe-Institut.

An interview with Dr. Wilfried Sühl-Strohmenger, who heads the Library System Department of the University Library of Freiburg. Mr. Sühl-Strohmenger, the job of the librarian has changed considerably in the last centuries ... Yes, whereas in past centuries the librarian was a collector and preserver of the cultural tradition, since the 1970s and 80s he has increasingly become a facilitator and navigator.

Among other things, this is due to the fact that the amount of information has grown gigantically. The demand for textbooks is rising. The Potential Dark Side of Information Literacy. Our National Security The Potential Dark Side of Information Literacy…The recent disclosure of classified Afghan military documents by WikiLeaks underscores the need for us, as a nation, to integrate the practice of information literacy training throughout our entire educational, workplace, and military training infrastructures.

The Potential Dark Side of Information Literacy

The merit of such leaks is very questionable, particularly when the information can negatively impact the ebb and flow of current events as well as inflict potential harm on our troops in the field. The unanticipated consequences of this “freedom of information” act will not necessarily become obvious since many political and military activities are covert by nature. One can accuse WikiLeaks of either emboldening the enemy or standing up for democracy….makes you wonder…mmmmmm. In either case, I am very uncomfortable about this “use” of a skill set that is clearly vital to our national interest. Information Literacy for 21st Century Life. Information literacy is the basis for all learning. These past few weeks I have had to do some soul searching regarding information literacy.

Information literacy is the basis for all learning

I have had a few lively discussions regarding what it is with people who did not see it with the same eyes that I do and I have been part of a professional development team leading a workshop on the topic. I have spent a considerable amount of time in the past 10 years researching it, reading about, teaching it, living it, so when I am challenged it is a good thing as I can re-evaluate where I am and my understanding. It all came to a head last week when I read the futurelab document "Digital literacies across the curriculum" which is an interesting and useful document, however something in this document caused me to take my ponderings a step further.
