Nineteen Eighty-Four is a novel by George Orwell published in 1949. It is a dystopian and satirical novel set in Oceania, where society is tyrannised by the Party and its totalitarian ideology. [ 1 ] The Oceanian province of Airstrip One is a world of perpetual war , omnipresent government surveillance, and public mind control , dictated by a political system euphemistically named English Socialism (Ingsoc) under the control of a privileged Inner Party elite that persecutes all individualism and independent thinking as thoughtcrimes . [ 2 ] Their tyranny is headed by Big Brother , the quasi-divine Party leader who enjoys an intense cult of personality , but who may not even exist. Big Brother and the Party justify their rule in the name of a supposed greater good. [ 1 ] The protagonist of the novel, Winston Smith , is a member of the Outer Party who works for the Ministry of Truth (Minitrue), which is responsible for propaganda and historical revisionism .

Newspeak is the fictional language in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four , written by George Orwell . It is a reduced language created by the totalitarian state as a tool to limit free thought , and concepts that pose a threat to the regime such as freedom , self-expression, individuality , peace , etc. Any form of thought alternative to the party’s construct is classified as “ thoughtcrime ,” “ crimethink ,” or “ doublethink .” Newspeak is explained in chapters 4 and 5 of Nineteen Eighty-Four , and in an appendix to the book. The language follows, for the most part, the same grammatical rules as English , but has a much more limiting, and constantly shifting vocabulary . Any synonyms or antonyms , along with undesirable concepts are eradicated.

Brave New World is a novel written in 1931 by Aldous Huxley and published in 1932. Set in London of AD 2540 (632 A.F. – "After Ford" – in the book), the novel anticipates developments in reproductive technology , sleep-learning , psychological manipulation and operant conditioning that combine to profoundly change society. Huxley answered this book with a reassessment in an essay, Brave New World Revisited (1958) and with his final work, a novel titled Island (1962). In 1999, the Modern Library ranked Brave New World fifth on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century . [ 1 ] In 2003, Robert McCrum writing for The Observer listed Brave New World number 53 in "the top 100 greatest novels of all time", [ 2 ] and the novel was listed at number 87 on the BBC 's survey The Big Read . [ 3 ] [ edit ] Title Brave New World' s title derives from Miranda 's speech in William Shakespeare 's The Tempest , Act V, Scene I: [ 4 ]

Amusing Ourselves to Death
Not to be confused with Amused to Death . Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business (1985) is a book by educator Neil Postman . The book's origins lay in a talk Postman gave to the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1984. He was participating in a panel on Orwell's 1984 and the contemporary world. In the introduction to his book Postman said that the contemporary world was better reflected by Aldous Huxley 's Brave New World , whose public was oppressed by their addiction to amusement, than by Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four , where they were oppressed by state control.
