Link farm

Each circle represents a website, and each arrow represents a pair of hyperlinks between two websites. Search engines require ways to confirm page relevancy. A known method is to examine for one-way links coming directly from relevant websites. The process of building links should not be confused with being listed on link farms, as the latter requires reciprocal return links, which often renders the overall backlink advantage useless. This is due to oscillation, causing confusion over which is the vendor site and which is the promoting site. History[edit] Inktomi was targeted for manipulation through link farms because it was then used by several independent but popular search engines. Link farm exchanges were at first handled on an informal basis, but several service companies were founded to provide automated registration, categorization, and link page updates to member Web sites.

See also[edit] References[edit] Click farm. A click farm is a form of click fraud, where a large group of low-paid workers is hired to click on paid advertising links for the click fraudster (click farm master or click farmer).

Click farm

The workers click the links, surf the target website for a period of time, and possibly sign up for newsletters prior to clicking another link. For many of these workers, clicking on enough ads per day may increase their revenue substantially and may also be an alternative to other types of work. It is extremely difficult for an automated filter to detect this simulated traffic as fake because the visitor behavior appears exactly the same as that of an actual legitimate visitor. Filtering[edit] Pay per click providers, including Google, Yahoo! Methods[edit] The first method is by hiring competitor fraudsters to deplete the advertising budget of the competitor so that they will be able to have their ads shown in higher pay per click rankings at a lower cost. URL redirection. URL redirection, also called URL forwarding, is a World Wide Web technique for making a web page available under more than one URL address.

URL redirection

When a web browser attempts to open a URL that already has been redirected, a page with a different URL is opened. For example, www.example.com is redirected to example.iana.org. Doorway page. Doorway pages are web pages that are created for spamdexing.

Doorway page

This is for spamming the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases with the purpose of sending visitors to a different page. They are also known as bridge pages, portal pages, jump pages, gateway pages, entry pages and by other names. Doorway pages that redirect visitors without their knowledge use some form of cloaking.

This usually falls under Black Hat SEO. Explanation[edit] Doorway pages are often easy to identify in that they have been designed primarily for search engines, not for human beings. Because many search engines give a penalty for using the META refresh command,[1] some doorway pages just trick the visitor into clicking on a link to get them to the desired destination page, or they use Javascript for redirection. More sophisticated doorway pages, called Content Rich Doorways, are designed to gain high placement in search results without using redirection. SpamCop.net - Beware of cheap imitations.
