the Caffeinated Traveller

Product Review: Ila Wedge There have been times during my travels when I’ve compromised my personal safety — unknowingly and deliberately — just to get where I wanted to go. When I think back on these moments I shiver. Yes I was naive and possibly insane. http://caffeinatedtraveller.com/

http://myfolieadeux.com/ The weather here has been uncharacteristically warm for winter . Seasonal temperatures are higher than normal; and we have seen more rain than snow this time of the year. I can’t complain, because to me, this is the kind of winter I like – mild – although I can’t help but wonder if this is a manifestation of global warming. Because we are having spring-like temperatures, I started craving for a meal that was lighter than your usual winter stew or casserole . Salads remind me of warmer weather, but I wasn’t exactly ready to lunch on just leafy greens. So I thought, why not a pasta salad?

Nerd's Eye View

http://www.nerdseyeview.com/blog/ In spite of the disappointing weather, we rather enjoyed our in town getaway at the Holiday Inn near the Space Needle. We ate chowder, watched the Looney Tunes marathon on Nickelodeon, wandered around the empty Pike Place Market, and in general, just enjoyed being some place else — sort of. You can do this too, because the Holiday Inn wants to give you one night at one of their “refreshed” properties anywhere in the US. Leave me a comment with the state and city where you’d like to stay — check out the Holiday Inn site for locations.… continued…

http://www.italylogue.com/ Not everyone can travel to Italy every year, or be in Italy whenever they want – so, for some, the next best thing is reading about Italy. Immersing oneself in a book about Italian culture or set in an Italian city can offer a delightful temporary escape – not to mention planning ammunition for a trip. With that in mind, here are some of my personal favorite books either about Italy or set in Italy, along with some other highly-recommended books As Spring is, well, close to springing in the Northern Hemisphere, we’ve got the earth on our minds. That’s why this month the Italy Roundtable has chosen ROOTS as our blogging topic. How metaphorical will we get?

The Vacation Gals

Last summer when my family was road tripping to Montana we arrived in Great Falls late one night. The kids had fallen asleep in the car, so my husband went and checked-in while I stayed with the kids. When he returned with the room keys, we coaxed our groggy children out of the car, through the hotel, up the elevators and into our guest room. We kept the room dark, leaving only the entry light on, and quickly tucked the kids into bed hoping they'd drift back to sleep. My husband went to put our waters in the mini-fridge only to notice some beers. http://thevacationgals.com/

Toast your romance with a sensual soak in the world-exclusive, 7-foot tall Champagne Glass Whirlpool Bath-for-Two. Set on Pocono Palace’s golf course, The Roman Towers are designed in a Grand Roman theme with floor to ceiling columns, stunning arches, vaulted ceilings, covered walkways and a private, arched underpass for parking. A cathedral window offers a panoramic view of Pocono Palace’s lush surrounding landscape. Today somebody I follow on Twitter pointed me to this amazing Youtube video about Carly, an autistic Canadian girl who couldn’t speak, but eventually found a way to express herself, just by typing on a notebook.

http://almostfearless.com/ The road from Chiang Mai to Pai, Thailand has 762 bends, or so the t-shirts say. I didn’t even begin counting them. We’ve lived in Thailand on and off for 10 months over the last three years but we had always skipped Pai, the peaceful, mountain town famous for hippies and having not much to do. It’s just three hours north, up over the mountains in a series of switch backs and steep climbs, a fun, challenging route for a motorbike, so we finally decided to make the trek.
Note : The Egyptian word for flip-flops is shib-shibs. Except the b sound isn’t really a b , but kind of half way between a b and a p . Imagine saying “ship” but trying to swallow – or maybe kiss – the p . In the same way as British flip-flops (when we get to wear them) make a flip… flop sound, Egyptian ones go shib… shib . It’s a scuffing sound, the sound of loose toes and flapping heels. That’s onomatopoeia, that is.

When it comes to making memories, not all trips are created equal. As I think back over a lifetime of travel, there are just three trips that, for different reasons, I still think about all the time: Maui, Utah, and Turkey. But that’s a post for another day. When my family and I went to Galapagos in December, we hadn’t been on North Seymour Island for more than five minutes when I knew this was going to be one of those trips. If you have children, and you want to take a cruise, it’s gotta be with Disney. Right? That conventional wisdom is strongly reinforced when you sail on Uncle Walt’s newest ship, the gleaming, year-round, 4,000-passenger Fantasy. I attended the Fantasy’s christening in New York earlier this year, and then the whole family hopped aboard for a preview sail in…
Huge marble-like boulders are just about the last thing you’d expect to see on a windswept beach. But there they are, on the North Otago coastline some 40 kilometers south of Oamaru, sitting in the sand like enormous eggs. Labeling them one of the world’s ‘best rock formations’, the writers of the recent Lonely Planet’s 1000 Ultimate Sights book suggested that the Moeraki Boulders ‘might easily be mistaken as a bowling alley for the gods.’ According to Maori legend, the Moeraki Boulders are the remains of calabashes, kumaras and eel baskets that washed ashore after the Arai Te Uru, a
