e 2 janvier 2016, après une campagne patriotique intense, le Gouvernement de coalition du Premier Ministre Alexandre Papanikolau, rassemblant les extrêmes de droite et de gauche, se dirige vers la Banque de Grèce pour célébrer le retour de la Drachme. Dix-huit mois plus tôt, cette improbable coalition avait été élue sur un slogan nationaliste et populiste simple : « Non a l’Europe ». Il faut dire que la manière dont l’Europe s’y était prise pour imposer l’austérité aux grecs avait été tellement bureaucratique et maladroite que même les plus modérés n’acceptaient plus cette dictature de Bruxelles. Des suicides de pensionnés aux abois et des manifestations syndicales parfois sanglantes avaient eu raison des dernières hésitations. En septembre, le Gouvernement avait annoncé le retour à la Drachme et la reconquête de l’indépendance nationale.
