It is now well established, however, that wood-burning stoves and fireplaces as well as wildland and agricultural fires emit significant quantities of known health-damaging pollutants, including several carcinogenic compounds. Two of the principal gaseous pollutants in woodsmoke, CO and NOx, add to the atmospheric levels of these regulated gases emitted by other combustion sources. Health impacts of exposures to these gases and some of the other woodsmoke constituents (e.g., benzene) are well characterized in thousands of publications. As these gases are indistinguishable no matter where they come from, there is no urgent need to examine their particular health implications in woodsmoke.
With this as the backdrop, this review approaches the issue of why woodsmoke may be a special case requiring separate health evaluation through two questions. Woodsmoke. Chemical Constituents and Molds of Wood Smoke, Woodsmoke, Wood burning, Woodburning, Biomass burning. Lead, Cyanide, Dioxin and Radioactive particles from Wood burning. Also see: Tables:Wood smoke Weights.
(as pdf, size13KB) (be sure to see references for tables.) Chemicals listed here are only the tip of the iceberg - combustion variables lead to hundreds if not thousands of chemical combinations. Some are sweet smelling vanilla and others are known to be the most toxic chemicals on earth. Wood also carries mold spores, some are able to be cultured from wood ashe. (molds are listed at the bottom of the Table from above) The Chemical Composition of Wood Smoke. Smoke is something that we will deal with all throughout our lives, in everyday situations as well as in emergencies.
But not all smoke is the same -- in fact, the smoke will vary depending upon what is being burned. So then what, exactly, is smoke made of? Smoke consists of gasses and airborne particles produced as a result of combustion or burning. The specific chemicals depend on the fuel used to produce the fire. 針葉樹燃焼を可能にしたハイブリッド構造の薪ストーブAGNI「アグニ」-HOME- アグニ独自の画期的なハイブリッド燃焼システムを採用し、熱効率が良く排気もクリーン。
Biomass Boiler Buyers Guide. Nexterra Systems Corp.www.nexterra.ca Nexterra is a leading provider of plant-scale energy from renewable waste systems that generates energy and fuels for a range of customers, including district energy providers, industrial process plants and independent power producers.
Nexterra systems integrate seamlessly with customer operations, providing both environmental and operational advantages, including high reliability and class-leading emissions performance. These systems convert local, renewable waste feedstocks into clean burning “syngas” that can be used as a substitute for natural gas and other fossil fuels in a range of applications. In addition to continuously improving its core gasification technologies, Nexterra has developed a syngas cleaning and conditioning system that produces engine-grade syngas. This enables the gas to be directly fired into an industrial internal combustion engine. Boiler furnaces. Is Burning Wood Bad for the Environment? The pungent scent of wood burning often evokes memories of simpler, more natural pleasures such as campouts or evenings around a fireplace. Burning wood still fills utilitarian functions, as well. Why Burning Yard Waste Is Bad. Is It Better to Bury Brush or Burn It? Environmental Effects. Burn Barrel in Back Yard Backyard burning produces various compounds toxic to the environment including nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide, and particle pollution. Nitrogen oxides, or NOx, is a group of nitrogen compounds that are partially responsible for acid rain and contribute to global warming, ozone depletion, and the formation of smog. Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are carbon-based compounds that undergo photochemical reactions (i.e., they react with sunlight) when released into the atmosphere.
The VOCs and the compounds they form in the atmosphere, such as ozone, contribute to the formation of smog. Carbon monoxide, or CO, chemically reacts with sunlight to create harmful ozone. The Environmental Dangers of Backyard Fire Pits. Dear EarthTalk: Backyard fire pits have become the latest must-have gardening feature. How bad are they on the environment? -- Michael O’Laughlin, Tigard, OR With Fall setting in and the mercury starting to drop, many of us want to extend our time outdoors, and sitting around a backyard fire pit has become one of the most popular means to do so. But even though it may be fun—s’mores anyone? —it is not good for the environment, especially during times when air quality is already poor. It’s hard to assess the larger impact of backyard fire pits on local or regional air quality, but no one questions the fact that breathing in wood smoke can be irritating if not downright harmful.
Fine particles also aggravate chronic heart and lung diseases, and have been linked to premature deaths in those already suffering from such afflictions. Is Burning Trash Bad? EPA’s Ban On Wood Burning Stoves Just Days From Taking Effect. The Environmental Protection Agency is set to finalize a set of regulations in February that critics say will effectively ban production of 80 percent of the wood- and pellet-burning stoves in America. The EPA had published a set of proposed regulations more than a year ago, and since then had accepted public comments. But the regulations already are having an impact. An advertisement for the Central Boiler Company says that company’s classic outdoor wood furnaces will be outlawed by the new regulations and will not be available later this spring.
The EPA has argued that the new regulations would improve air quality. The regulations require new stoves to burn up to 70 percent cleaner. “Residential wood smoke causes many counties in the U.S. to either exceed the EPA’s health-based national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) for fine particles or places them on the cusp of exceeding those standards,” the EPA previously said. It would be the first new standards on stoves since the 1980s.
