http://www.gorillavsbear.net/ We are psyched to present the bi-coastal pairing of Brooklyn’s Chairlift + L.A.’s Nite Jewel — a couple of bands who happen to be responsible for two of the best pop records of 2012 so far — on Monday, April 16 , live at Club Dada in Deep Ellum here in Dallas. Spune has hooked us up with 2 pairs of tickets to give away for this one: just leave your name in the comments below or over on Facebook , and I’ll pick the winners this Friday. Just in time for tonight , here’s a tender, silky-smooth new love song from Austin’s White Denim (the b-side “ Don’t You Say No ” is apparently an R. Kelly cover , which actually makes a lot of sense): [ image ] Just a heads up that White Denim rolls through Dallas this Thursday evening, and in addition to these free tickets , our friends at the Granada Theater have thrown in a few screen-printed copies of this ridiculous poster for the winners.

TwentyFourBit

http://www.twentyfourbit.com/ Considering the talented crowd she runs with , I’ve been remiss in only mentioning Sara Watkins’ name as a collaborator so far. Sure, she’s shared the stage and studio with the likes of Fiona Apple, Jon Brion, Gillian Welch, her trio with Chris Thile and Sean Watkins, Nickel Creek, and many others over the years, but now this new alt-country jam, “When It Pleases You,” is on its fourth repeat over here and the time has come to catch up on her solo work. Watkins’ sophomore LP, Sun Midnight Sun , dropped this week via Nonesuch, complete with guest turns from said notable friends, Fiona Apple, who duets on a cover of the Everly Brothers’ “You’re the One I Love”, Jackson Browne, and a guitarist/songwriter that continues to impress of late, Blake Mills . Give the Mills-produced LP’s extended single a shot below. I’d bet fans of the aforementioned artists might find a new favorite (if they haven’t already): Continue →

Chillwave. It's been shoved down our throats over the past couple of years due to its ease of creation and distribution (thank you Ableton Live soft synths and plug-ins; thank you Soundcloud and the blogs that embed you!!), and a lot of it fucking sucks . This year saw some lazy remixes and underwhelming sophomore releases from the first batch of the genre's icons, and the honeymoon phase ended. Disappointment sets in as the blogosphere continues to herald "the next big thing" and humors publicists' requests for coverage-- maybe for the sake of traffic, maybe for the lack of a better voice. You feel a craving for something visceral. http://alteredzones.com/

We Listen For You

Another year, another upcoming South-by. Typically this is where you discover new music, where bands break through, and a place where stars are born. But if I hear the words "buzzband", "best new music", or "Salem" I'll vomit all over 6th Street for Odd Future to fake fall in to. Ignore the shitwave you have to tread through and you will find there are tons of amazingly talented bands and barrels of ear pleasing musical happenings at SXSW. However, there can almost be too much music to take in before you lose track of bands you actually want to remember.
http://www.radiohead.com/deadairspace/ Penderecki is coming to London this week, with the AUKSO Chamber Orchestra . They're going to play the music on the recording we've just released together. To hear him conduct Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima and Polymorphia with this wonderful Polish orchestra is a really magical experience, so if you're in London on Thursday, perhaps you'd like to come along..... Jonny Mixed bag of stuff for yer ears - some sufi qawwals, some 50's chopin jazz covers, some californian 60's rock.

Fop-haired British producer Rusko’s new album Songs dropped this week, and it’s a pretty thorough representation of his varying styles, as well as those that influenced him -- throwback rave pop… Read Story » http://stereogum.com/

Built like a soundtrack to a lonesome philosophical Western, Jon Porras (one half of RSTB fave Barn Owl) creates an epic that follows a doomed rider to the Black Mesa , a bridge between worlds. Few have picked up the reigns of the charred earth sound Neil Young created for the film Dead Man , but Barn Owl and Earth both seem to tap into its resonant mixture of Japanese dirge psychedelics, German Progressive's loss of time and space and the West Coast guitar sound that once had roots in the 60's boom of flowers and fuzz. It’s never hard to feel the dust catch in your throat, or the faint jingle of spurs, though the mastery of Porras' work is that it’s hard to tell if its for real or just a ghost of the mind.
