Humanity's Cultural History Depicted in 5-Minute Video. All roads lead from Rome, according to a visual history of human culture built entirely from the birth and death places of notable people. The 5-minute animation provides a fresh view of the movements of humanity over the last 2,600 years. Maximilian Schich, an art historian at the University of Texas at Dallas, and his colleagues used the Google-owned knowledge base, Freebase, to find 120,000 individuals who were notable enough in their life-times that the dates and locations of their births and deaths were recorded. The list includes people ranging from Solon, the Greek lawmaker and poet, who was born in 637 bc in Athens, and died in 557 bc in Cyprus, to Jett Travolta — son of the actor John Travolta — who was born in 1992 in Los Angeles, California, and died in 2009 in the Bahamas.

The team used those data to create a movie that starts in 600 bc and ends in 2012. Each person’s birth place appears on a map of the world as a blue dot and their death as a red dot.

Urban Engines launches to use data to make city transportation better. Stanford computer science professor Balaji Prabhakar first became interested in how transportation systems move when, years ago, he got stuck in “the mother of all traffic jams” in India. Now, after two years in stealthy development, Prabhakar and his co-founder, former Google exec Shiva Shivakumar, are launching a startup called Urban Engines that is using data, algorithms and behavioral economics to help make cities less congested and urban transportation operate more efficiently. In an office in downtown San Francisco this week, six stories above the blaring horns of buses and cars running up and down Market Street, Shivakumar and Prabhakar showed me a screen of a train system that could be any big city in the world — Sao Paulo, San Francisco, Bangalore.

Prabhakar clicked the play button and we watched a geometrical visualization of the flow of train commuters moving into stations, getting on trains and getting off at their stops. Some trains were too full, some not full enough. Interactive Game of Thrones Map with Spoilers Control.

Aren’t maps just a reflection of reality? In this piece Nathan Palmer will show us how maps are actually a social construction and how they can lead us to think that anglo nations are bigger and more central to the world than nations of color. A few years back I had the opportunity of seeing Jane Elliot speak at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln my alma mater. She was one of the boldest speakers I’ve ever heard before or since. She said, “The education system in the U.S. is racist and I’m going to prove it to you.”

Elliot continued, “How many continents are there?” “Wait. Reading this doesn’t do it justice. “I’ve got another question for you.” Elliot then turned to the rest of us. “You people in the front row, where is the crease my assistant just put on the paper?” Before anyone could answer she added, “why would we use this map? “We use this map because it makes the United States and Europe look bigger than they actually are. But this begs the question. Atlas of Prejudice — 20 ways to slice the European continent from Atlas...

Google today launched the Google Maps Gallery, an extension of the Google Maps Public Data Program it announced last October. The new gallery is meant to showcase maps from the organizations Google is working with, including the likes of National Geographic, the U.S. Geological Survey and the City of Edmonton, and to make them more discoverable. As Google Maps product manager Jordan Breckenridge told me, the idea behind the Public Data Program is to unlock the maps and geospatial information many organizations already have.

Too often, though, that data isn’t easily available to the public and when it is, it’s often in the form of an image file or PDF. That’s not what most users expect from an online map today. The maps Google is currently highlighting in the Gallery range from land use zoning in San Jose and a U.S. Participants who applied for the program and were selected by Google received free access to the enterprise version of Google Maps Engine.

Quite Possibly the Most Brilliant Thing Ever — A Map of the Internet, Drawn to Scale. O Click on the image above to expand, or click here to see the full-resolution version. From artist Martin Vargic comes this beautiful, ultra-high-resolution fictional map of the internet — scaled using actual from Alexa to rank the top 500 or so websites by traffic in the entire world.

According to Vargic, it took 3 weeks of 10-hour days to create, basing the project off of National Geographic maps. And it's still a work in progress, detailing just a miniscule portion of the entire internet. "The map is divided into 2 distinctive parts; the eastern continent, 'the old world' showcases software companies, gaming companies and some of the more real-life oriented websites. The scale between a website's traffic and its size is not exact, but websites are generally portrayed in ratio relative to it. " The final result is mezmerizing, with entire continents representing sectors of the web. It's a strange and beautiful world, and in some ways, as real as our own. Tom McKay.

Legendary Lands: Umberto Eco on the Greatest Maps of Imaginary Places and Why They Appeal to Us. By Maria Popova “Often the object of a desire, when desire is transformed into hope, becomes more real than reality itself.” Celebrated Italian novelist, philosopher, essayist, literary critic, and list-lover Umberto Eco has had a long fascination with the symbolic and the metaphorical, extending all the way back to his vintage semiotic children’s books. Half a century later, he revisits the mesmerism of the metaphorical and the symbolic in The Book of Legendary Lands (public library) — an illustrated voyage into history’s greatest imaginary places, with all their fanciful inhabitants and odd customs, on scales as large as the mythic continent Atlantis and as small as the fictional location of Sherlock Holmes’s apartment. Eco writes in the introduction: Saint-Sever World Map, from the 'Saint-Sever Beatus' (1086), Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France T and O map, Bartholomaeus Angelicus, 'Le livre des propriétés des choses' (1392) Section of the 'Tabula Peutingeriana' (12th-century copy)

Circular city maps: Archie Archambault designs minimalist city maps printed on a 19th-Century letterpress. Courtesy of Archie's Press Archie Archambault was a philosophy major who moved to Portland, Ore., in 2009 after college and found himself getting lost. For all their practical uses, Google maps didn’t seem to really give him a local’s sense of neighborhoods, or how to navigate the city as a whole, or reflect his perceptions of how long it took to get from point A to point B.

“I was super absorbed in the GPS,” he told me. “But a Google map has a scientific feel. So he drew a circle with a cross hair in it, dividing it into quadrants. “I build a map in my head and then I talk with locals to see if my perception matches up with their experience of a city,” Archambault said, adding that he tries to informally poll the widest range of people possible, including his favorite insider resource: real estate agents.

Archambault started printing maps on a 19th-century letterpress machine in 2011. But Archambault isn't trying to reinterpret reality; he wants to reflect it in a subjective way.
