The decline of television has been greatly exaggerated and a new US study reveals that social media actually helps boost TV ratings. A majority (58%) of heavy engagers – i.e., consumers who share related thoughts via social networks at least 10 times a week – report watching more live TV, according to an iModerate Research Technologies study. Philippe Brodeur, director of AerTV told Digital Times the same is true in Ireland. “Absolutely it (social media interaction) is boosting TV figures,” he said. “People have always multi-tasked whist watching TV, whether it was reading the paper or doing the ironing and using social media on the TV lounger is just an extension of that.” Respondents to the survey said that they watch Social TV (interacting with shows via social media) because it gives them a sense of relevance and recognition, that sharing online allowed them to strengthen relationships with friends and that it just makes TV more fun.

By Lee Rainie and Susannah Fox Overview Some 70% of all cell phone owners and 86% of smartphone owners have used their phones in the previous 30 days to perform at least one of the following activities: Coordinate a meeting or get-together — 41% of cell phone owners have done this in the past 30 days. Solve an unexpected problem that they or someone else had encountered – 35% have used their phones to do this in the past 30 days. Decide whether to visit a business, such as a restaurant — 30% have used their phone to do this in the past 30 days. Find information to help settle an argument they were having — 27% have used their phone to get information for that reason in the past 30 days. Overall, these “just-in-time” cell users—defined as anyone who has done one or more of the above activities using their phone in the preceding 30 days—amount to 62% of the entire adult population.

Younger cell phone users are more likely than older users to have performed most of these activities.
