I created this tree for a lesson about anger. I read 1st graders for the book When Sophie Gets Angry - Really, Really Angry... by Molly Bang . We talked about things that make us angry, such as when somebody pushes in line, when someone takes my crayons, when someone will not play with me, etc. While reading the book we talked about "okay" and "not okay" behaviors that Sophie was doing. I asked students to give me a "thumbs up" for "okay" behaviors and a "thumbs down" for "not okay" behaviors.

Reviewed 36 outcomes studies that used cognitive and/pr behavioral treatment to reduce impulsivity in children. Treatments included self-statement modification, reinforcement contingencies, modeling, strategy training, problem-solving training, and numerous treatment combinations. Subjects were all described as impulsive, but varied in clinical diagnosis, including attention-deficit disorder hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, behavior disorder, and learning disability. Other subjects were labeled as non-self-controlled, or behavior problem. Meta-analytic techniques showed that intervention for impulsivity were associated with improvements of approximately one third to three quarters of a standard deviation relative to untreated control subjects.

Editor: Geri In April 2003 I coordinated a support group for military mothers in the town I live in (Taylorsville, Ky.). We are a small group, but these were mothers whose sons are only 18 through 21 and had enlisted and about to be deployed to Iraq. These mothers knew me and that I had been through this before. They basically turned to me for help and support. Our projects have been sending out cards to our troops from our town, sending out pictures and letters written by some of our 1st and 2nd graders in our elementary school, making and selling beaded safety pin flags and beaded safety pin yellow ribbons to make money for our projects and on April 18th we are hosting a guest speaker, a Chief Master Sgt. from the Air National Guard, who lives in our town and has just returned from an 8 month deployment in Iraq.
