So....this is the micro-mini prototype cabin (just to show some ideas by video, by example, and by recycled trash) I dubbed "The Hickshaw"- a rickshaw for hicks. It has since been built, both as-is in scale, and much larger, by a couple of people who have been kind enough to email me in the past. IT ALSO IS NOW FOR SALE.... ALL cedar too....$800.00. It, with some of my other cabins, tiny houses, shed work, and forts, has been in the NY Times, Seattle Times, Boston Glove, PBS, NPR, ABC, CBS, and so on... Children's Bedrooms. Naturally Enduring: Shou-Sugi-Ban. Shed Roof Treehouse. For a full overview of the treehouse build, go here (under the TOUR header.)

Shed Roof Treehouse

It was an epic weekend of hard-assed work. The CC had a game plan that I thought was a bit ambitious – we do have kids after all, but we managed it...just. We started the weekend with our platform. Now we needed walls…and a roof because there is more rain forecast, of COURSE. July 2011. "THE KRUNK BUNK"- Its a tiny sleep/work chamber for studio apartments, city lofts, and small spaces in general- and was a project we undertook to exemplify small space efficiency.

July 2011

It HANGS from the ceiling, as opposed to most other bunks and micro-lofts that have legs (which often limit what you can do, store, place below them). It would be best suited in a high-ceiling environment, but we placed it here for the sake of demonstration- in a setting not perfectly ideal (but it was all we had for space in my small home). THIS is also ONE of two structures we built as groups two days ago in our workshop- 14 HOURS LONG- man, were we all tired by the end. We'll soon post photos of the group project that my brother Dustin led, as well- and MANY others....

Cardboard Folding Children Playhouse for Small Urban Apartments. My Space is a cardboard folding playhouse for children aged 3-6 designed by Liya Mairson, a graduate of Israel’s Shenkar College for Engineering and Design.

Cardboard Folding Children Playhouse for Small Urban Apartments

It’s been developed especially for small spaces because in closed state it is very compact. Although it could be opened to become an awesome play area with multiply possibilities. Playhouse’s look and shape depends only on children’s imagination. The great thing is that they could open and close it by themselves. The shelter has plastic sheets covering it, but only the structure is shown here to demonstrate how it folds. The portable flat-folding tent can be stored easily and transported so that dispatch to a disaster site can be easily accomplished. The Can Koseoglu BoxTENT construction uses recycled and recyclable corrugated cardboard and polyester fabric. The end result is a lightweight survival tent that is both durable and environmentally friendly. Fantasy Craft: 5 Unique Campers Built for Land, Sea & Sky. One man with many ideas, Jay Nelson seems to have a custom camper or mini-home in store for every occasion, including tree houses, a sleeper boat, unconventional caravan and scooter camper.

Fantasy Craft: 5 Unique Campers Built for Land, Sea & Sky

It would be too easy to classify his work, which is not ‘neo-hippy’ nor ‘steampunk’ but a blend of childhood fantasy tempered with adult reality, always carefully responsive to practical needs and functional materials. A common theme: space for a surfboard on top, whether it be a water- or land-going vessel, and unconventional shapes, be they angular or curved. There is no mistaking his conversions or additions for being anything but new and different, but there is also a way that they work with what is there – in this case, for instance, extending the lines (and thus streamlining) an otherwise clunky white Honda Civic. And it is amazing what he manages to pack into a single project, especially starting roughly from scratch: “The Golden Gate is an electric camper car measuring 96″x54″x64″. Decor inspiration. Materials. Furniture inspiration. Sheila Blake: shedworker. Artist Sheila Blake works in this marvellous copper-sided garden office built on a sloping piece of ground in Takoma Park designed by Travis Price Architects.

The entrance faces away from the main house and the whole thing rests on exposed concrete pillars. Large windows and skylights allow plenty of light into the space. The build is featured in Neal Zimmerman's excellent Home Workspace Idea Book where he likens it to a floating boat moored at a wharf. Finnish forestworking. Not technically a garden office but still a lovely example of microarchitecture, this is a lovely shedlike atmosphere in Finland where you can sleep and cook too, as well as do a little light shedworking.

I don't think this will be giving Michael Reynolds and his Earthships a run for their money, but its a really great little concept. First, thanks to Alex Johnson over at www.SHEDWORKING.co.uk for a really cool review/write-up on my book "Humble Homes, Simple Shacks"- it was also recently in the NY Times, and the Wall Street Journal!

Portable solar device creates potable water. (PhysOrg.com) -- By harnessing the power of the sun, a Monash University graduate has designed a simple, sustainable and affordable water-purification device, which has the potential to help eradicate disease and save lives. The Solarball, developed as Mr Jonathan Liow’s final year project during his Bachelor of Industrial Design, can produce up to three litres of clean water every day. The spherical unit absorbs sunlight and causes dirty water contained inside to evaporate. As evaporation occurs, contaminants are separated from the water, generating drinkable condensation. The condensation is collected and stored, ready for drinking.

Liow’s design was driven by a need to help the 900 million people around the world who lack access to safe drinking water.

UK Summerhouse. Posted on Sep 20, 2010 in Alternative Energy & Architecture I had an interesting time cruising lightlocations.com, a finder service for photographers and videographers seeking interesting places to shoot. This rustic house sits beside a peaceful pond in the Isle of Wight, UK with a view of the sea. I wonder who lives there and when I can come visit!?

Posted on Nov 02, 2010 in Alt Energy, Tiny Homes, & Structures Source: Tiny House Blog Glamping, the new term being used for upscale — or glamorous — camping, is one of the fastest growing trends in the eco-luxe hospitality industry. Glamour camping offers all of the attractions of camping – sleeping under the stars, sitting around a campfire, falling asleep to the sounds of nature, etc, while taking all of the hassles out of the experience – pitching a tent, lugging gear and food, sleeping on the bumping ground, collecting firewood, etc.

It then attaches the comforts of a luxury hotel room – ultra comfortable king size bed, luxury linens, concierge and cleaning services, etc.
