Automata: Intricate Art Object Powered by 1,000 Gears. Automata: Intricate Art Object Powered by 1,000 Gears Article by Steph, filed under Sculpture & Craft in the Art category. At the winding of a handle and the flick of a switch, gears begin to move inside a mysterious faceted wooden object. Then, as the panels are opened to reveal what’s inside, a solitary figure can be seen, hunched inside a spinning circle.

This is the work of sculptor Levi van Veluw, demonstrating the strange beauty of Automata. The Amsterdam-based artist is known for photography, sculpture and installations that explore the human form. “The images that I make consist of often unlogical combinations of materials, patterns, colours, forms, with my head as the only constant factor,” says van Veluw in his artist statement. “In most cases it is my head that is the carrier of these transformations and combinations. Euphorie -Wall Painting By Supakitch & Korlalie.

Supakitch and Koralie teamed up to make a great mural wall painting. The process is documented in a superb video by Director Raphaël Hache and editor Jérôme Lozano. Layered Portraits From the Fourth Dimension. It’s not often that we see collages which take us through four dimensions with a quick glance, leaving us not with just depth, but also with the passage of time. These complex and beautiful portraits from Brazilian artist Lucas Simões, explore the often forgotten aspect of time, taking multiple images of the same person and layering them into both organic and geometric sunken relief. If there was a dimension for meaning, Simões has captured that too in his beautiful works. For his predominantly organically styled series desretratos, Simões invited intimate friends to tell a secret as he took their portrait.

Not intending to hear the secret, he also had them select a song for him to listen to as he captured their facial expressions. After the session, he asked if their secret had a color: information he used in selecting the final hue of each portrait. Simões creation process is both highly precise and complex. Amanda Shelsher - Introduction. Frida’s Corsets, Leslie Jamison. Frida Kahlo wore plaster corsets for most of her life because her spine was too weak to support itself. She painted them, naturally, covering them with pasted scraps of fabric and drawings of tigers, monkeys, plumed birds, a blood-red hammer and sickle, and streetcars like the one whose handrail rammed through her body when she was eighteen years old. The corsets remain to this day in her famous blue house—their embedded mirrors reflecting back our gazes, their collages bringing the whole world into stricture. In one, an open circle has been carved into the plaster like a skylight near the heart. Photograph by Juan Guzmán. Courtesy collection Galeria López Quirog. Charles Baxter once found what he called “the last appeal” in a scene from Sherwood Anderson, a woman running naked in the rain, begging attention from an old deaf man.

Frida’s corsets hardened around unspeakable longing. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera were married eighty-two years ago yesterday, on August 21, 1929. iGoogle. Hundertwasser Architecture. Friedensreich Hundertwasser Architecture The father of the Green Roof...Born in Austria 1928, died at Sea 2000.

Studio Visit & Q&A: Ben Venom - my love for you is a stampede of horses. Above image by Ryan Hendon. I caught up with Ben Venom recently to check out his progress on his biggest quilt to date, The Mega Quilt, a 13' x15' quilt made from over 125 Heavy Metal band T-shirts. The quilt will be on display in Yerba Buena Center for the Arts upcoming show BAN6: Visual Arts Exhibition, which opens July 8th, 2011.

We also got to chat about the quilt, how he fell into the craft and what's coming up for him. Enjoy! Let's get down to brass tacks, quilting isn't a male heavy medium. In 2008 I was invited to be part of an exhibition in Berlin, Germany and wanted to make a really large piece for the show but not have to pay a lot of money to ship it. Are you self-taught? Yes...I am self-taught. In your current work you combine a traditionally feminine craft with a male dominated style of music; heavy metal. Heavy Metal has always had this over the top mentality with the 70's and 80's dominated by all these dudes wearing makeup and looking like strippers. The Mega quilt! HA! Home - Damien Hirst.

Phone Sheep » Popular Fidelity » Images. In an age of cell phones, ye olden dial phone with the curly cord is quickly becoming a thing of the past. So what to do with all those useless coils of cord.

How about creating a flock of sheep that you don’t have to feed, shear or clean up after. The art was created by Jean Luc Cornec and has been displayed in the Museum For Communications in Frankfurt Main, Germany. And the wolves are never a problem either.
